ROSCOMMON BORN PRIEST Fr Stan Brennan, who received a prestigious award from the Japanese emperor last month, has died in South Africa at the age of 83.
Fr Brennan was too ill to receive the 6th class Grand Cordon Order Award of the Rising Sun Silver and Gold Rays himself, and so was represented by his brother at the ceremony at the Japanese Embassy.
A member of the Franciscan priest’s family has confirmed that he passed away yesterday morning, and said that he had been “truly delighted” at receiving the award.
Fr Brennan is one of only eight people in the world to be bestowed with the honour.
He was recognised for his work in the community of Boksburg, where he was dedicated to the development of social welfare and the preservation of the environment.
He had been working in South Africa since 1965 and over the years had established projects on education, drug and alcohol abuse, AIDS, child care and domestic abuse.
A biographer recently visited with an ill Fr Brennan to work on his life story.
