A recent Irish survey found that 67% of people believe tipping is becoming less voluntary Alamy Stock Photo

How often (if ever) do you tip at bars and restaurants?

Diners at one of Gordon Ramsey’s London restaurants can now expect to see a 20% discretionary service charge at the end of their bills.

CELEBRITY CHEF GORDON Ramsay has increased the voluntary gratuity at one of his London restaurants – and not everyone is happy about it.

The 20% addition to diners’ bills at Ramsay’s Lucky Cat restaurant has been compared to US-style hospitality practices, despite it being described as a discretionary service charge.

Some have also questioned the nature of the charge as an opt-out system rather than opt-in, with an opinion writer for The Spectator saying that “you are made to feel that you are committing a dreadful sin by asking for the charge to be removed”.

It points to similar results from a recent survey conducted for Ireland’s competition regulator, which found that two-thirds of people believe tipping in Ireland is becoming less voluntary.

Three-quarters of respondents also said that they would like it to be easier to opt out of tipping.

So, we want to know your thoughts on the matter and tipping in general.
