Young man arrested after 89-year-old woman is assaulted and mugged

Another man was released without charge in relation to the incident.

A 25-YEAR-OLD MAN has been arrested in Limerick after the alleged assault and robbery of an 89-year-old woman.

The incident took place on Sunday, 2 August.

At about 10.30pm that night the woman was approached outside her home on Rossbrien Road by a lone male who attempted to take her handbag.

Following a struggle he made off on foot with the bag, which contained a small amount of cash. The woman was taken from the scene by an ambulance to University Hospital Limerick.

Gardaí said the man is being detained at Roxboro Road Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

He is the second person to be arrested in connection with this incident.

A man arrested on 3 August was released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
