Aung San Suu Kyi in Ireland: Full details of public event

The Burmese democracy icon will receive the Freedom of Dublin and be serenaded at public concert. Here’s the running order for the night.

THE BURMESE ICON Aung San Suu Kyi will be given the Freedom of Dublin city this evening in an event which will allow the public to see her in person.

The event begins at 8.30pm in Grand Canal Square and broadcaster Claire Byrne will MC with both Dublin City Mayor Andrew Montague and Amnesty International Ireland chief Colm O’Gorman joining her on stage.

If you are interested in attending, you should note the running order for the evening’s events.

  • At 7pm, artists including the Dublin Gospel Choir, Eleanor McEvoy, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Extreme Rhythm and I Draw Slow, will entertain the crowd.
  • City Manager Dr John Tierney will read the Freedom of the City resolution.
  • Aung San Suu Kyi will be escorted to the stage by members of the Dublin Fire Brigade and will sign the Roll of Honorary Freedom.
  • Gifts will be presented on behalf of Lord Mayor Andrew Montague, Dublin City Council and the Rohingya community in Ireland, an ethnic minority from Myanmar.
  • Aung San Suu Kyi will make one of her few public speeches during her visit to Europe.
  • Members of the Karen community, Myanmar’s largest ethnic minority, will perform traditional music.
  • Amnesty’s Colm O’Gorman will welcome Aung San Suu Kyi on behalf of all activists who campaigned for her release.
  • A birthday cake will be presented to Aung San Suu Kyi – her birthday is tomorrow, 19 June. Eleanor McEvoy will lead the crowd in a rendition of Happy Birthday before the event comes to a close.
