JOE DUFFY HAS called for the introduction of laws that would allow gardaí to seize mobile phones if they “have a hunch”, as reported in the Irish Independent.
The former radio presenter made the comments at an event at the Convention Centre in Dublin that marked 30 years since the murder of crime reporter Veronica Guerin.
Duffy said that laws of this kind would “match the realities of modern crime” and argued that “many criminals would carry something far more powerful called a smartphone”.
He added that “if they [gardaí] think someone has been up to something, they should be immediately allowed to confiscate their mobile phone” without requiring a search warrant.
We’re asking: Do you think gardaí should be able to check phones ‘on a hunch’?
