THE CLOCKS GO FORWARD one hour at 1am tomorrow morning as the country switches over to summer time.
The Russian government has decided this will be its last clock change, according to the Guardian. President Dmitry Medvedev said the change is “irritating” and affects people’s biorhythm.
Iceland is the only other European country not to switch for the daylight saving time system.
In Britain, the Daylight Saving Bill, which requires government analysis of the cost and benefits of the twice-yearly time switch, is currently going through parliament and has already passed through the initial stages. It could see Britain switching to Central European Time instead of its current Greenwich Mean Time, which Ireland follows.
For three years the Irish government followed Britain in deciding not to have any time changes – from 1969 through 1971.
Daylight Saving was initially brought in to give farmers more daylight to work in in the evenings, and means schoolchildren have brighter mornings when going to school in winter. However, critics say longer light in the evenings could reduce road fatalities and encourage a healthier lifestyle.
Either way, don’t forget to change your clocks/watches/phones tomorrow – though beware that your phone might already be set to go forward itself.
