Taking a Christmas swim? Be careful, says Coast Guard

Heavy swells and high swells will make the seas a dangerous place tomorrow.

IT IS A Christmas tradition in many parts of the country, but the Christmas swim could be more dangerous this year.

The windy weather has led to heavy swells in Irish coastal waters and the a Coast Guard spokesperson has said the public should avoid exposed coasts.

“It is important to be especially vigilant over the festive period where people are engaged in outdoor activities in areas and environments they may not be familiar with and the onset of inclement weather ever present.

“Remember to monitor weather broadcasts when travelling and heed the advice of the RSA on road use during severe weather and high winds.”

The public are advised not to venture out to the shoreline during heavy swell periods, not to engage in water sports, to stay off cliff paths, piers and harbour walls and stay off beaches.

Owners of small boats are told to secure them as wind begins to pick up again tonight.
