A MEETING of staff of the insurance company Aviva in Cork has voted unanimously to issue ballot papers to staff on whether to pursue industrial action.
The agreement, at a meeting of the trade union UNITE held last night, saw over 200 staff give unanimous approval to the balloting.
Another meeting is to be held in Portlaoise on Monday, to be attended by staff working at other Aviva branches.
Ballot papers on whether to pursue a full programme of industrial action are to be issued to all Aviva staff next week, potentially as early as Tuesday.
The potential action comes in the wake of Wednesday’s announcement that the company was to cut 950 positions from its Irish workforce of around 1,770.
UNITE represents around three-quarters of that number, but says more workers have sought to join the union in the last number of days to try and safeguard their positions.
The union has complained about the lack of information being offered by Aviva of the positions being lost. While Aviva says the 950 jobs will be cut between early next year and March 2014, it has not said where the jobs will go, or on what basis.
