THE CROWN PRINCE of Bahrain has declined an invitation to the royal wedding next week because of the ongoing unrest in his kingdom.

Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa had been invited to the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton amid concerns about the treatment of pro-democracy protesters in Bahrain in recent months.

But today he announced with “deep regret” that he had reached his “considered decision,” reports BBC News this evening, in light of the recent developments in the Gulf kingdom which he did not wish to see overshadow the royal event.

Bahrain has been mired in unrest and violence since February when pro-democracy protests began.

The regime has called in Saudi Arabian troops to keep order and pulled down the monument that had become a focal point for anti-government demonstrations.

  • Pity we could have had him arrested for crimes against the Bahraini People. Hassan that day will come when you will pay for firing on your own people.

  • Its time to get over things we cant change. You’ll feel better when you do. Lets at least give the woman a chance. How do you know she wont issue the apology that we have long waited for?

  • We went through enough hatred barry for god sake. Its only us who suffer for it in the end. It wont do one damn thing to change what happened. We wont exactly forget, but at least for our own sakes, we must try to move on

  • Hope we don’t have to wait as long as the murders of the innocent civilians in Croke Park, when the crown killed her own people !

I would be delighted if she apologised for or at least acknowledged, the past wrongdoings in her name. Indeed I do believe that she will and that’s why she is going to Croke Park.
Im surprised that people are prepared to ‘forget’ and ‘move on’ so easily, your forefathers would not thank you.

I don’t consider myself ‘hardcore’, to use your word, but I won’t be out there with my union jack flag either :)

    • I absolutely respect your views Barry and im no big fan of the monarchy and am not in the slightest bit interested in this wedding either, you say ‘people are so quick to forgive and forget’, so what do you suggest they do?… Walk around with huge chips on their shoulders?, and scorn every time they meet an English person?. Wrongs are committed in every country not just between Ireland and England. I’m English ok, now personally ive never harmed one person in my life, I’ve been brought up to treat people the way I would like to be treated, I have a very strict work ethic and yet sometimes when I’m out and about in Ireland, meeting people from all walks of life, I feel like I have to be the one to apologise and that it’s expected of me.
And when I read posts like your original one it really makes me feel bad. I can honestly say to you that I’m a little embarrassed to tell people I’m English,(well actually I’m scouse and sometimes that’s worse when you tell people!), I do hope she apologises too, and to ask you a question then, do you think it would make the relationship between the UK and Ireland any more amicable?

    • And dont talk for my forefathers barry. They’d want a progressive country, and not one still mired in bitterness.

  • Gunderson, the truth is always the truth no matter how repetitive it may be, and no matter how much people don’t want want to hear it.

Of course my timing is also bad, with our ‘royal’ visitors from overseas coming soon we woudn’t want any dissent by the subjects
