Fine Gael defends deletion of ‘abusive’ Facebook comments

Users have been flocking to Facebook to register opposition to Fine Gael’s position on full homosexual marriage rights.

FINE GAEL has defended its decision to delete comments being posted to the Wall of its official Facebook page, after hundreds of users took to the site to protest the party’s position on gay marriage.

The party has come under attack in recent days after repeated assertions by Dublin South East candidate Lucinda Creighton, who said her opposition to full gay marriage – in contrast to her support of the Civil Partnership Bill – was in line with the party’s own policies.

Hundreds of users have registered their disgust on the Fine Gael page, with a sustained wave of comments being posted on its Wall this evening – only for some of the comments to then be deleted by its administrators, prompting some to claim that their opinions were being ‘censored’.

This evening a spokesman said there was a “very straightforward explanation” for the moderation policy on the Facebook page – and insisted that only “abusive comments” were being removed, in line with the policy of the group that manages the Fine Gael page.

“It’s the policy that, when it becomes apparent there’s a coordinated attack from – very obviously – the same sources, given it’s a forum for open discussion, we consciously free up space for other people to have their say.”

Comments which raised issue with the party’s policies on any matter, the spokesman added, would “absolutely” be left online if they were not deemed abusive.

Have you had a comment removed from the Fine Gael Facebook page? Do you believe the party is acting fairly, or is being discriminatory? Have your say in the comments field below.

  • And the pundits are predicting fine Gael might get into government alone? Jeepers I may as well book my ticket outta here now! I don’t want to live in a country where 1. All people are not equal and 2. The views of the people are being ignored and censored. I hope that ppl will go out in their masses on Friday and prove the polls wrong and wipe that smug look of entitlement off endas face!

  • I had comments deleted- a few days ago when the question of why FG were overturning the ban on carted stag hunting (smacked of vested interests) and they refused to answer perfectly polite questions they were being asked to make a statement on.
Other topics raised re the health service policy and stance on equal rights also saw numerous comments, none of which were in any way abusive, were all deleted.
FG are lying when they say only abusive posts were removed, their failure to answer genuine questions put to them and in censorship of posts they didnt like lead me to believe that Enda Kenny & Co are a frightening choice for this country.

  • I really hope that Enda Kenny is questioned about this on Pat Kenny tomorrow morning!!!

  • I joined in a bit of the debating going on as I found the censorship to be disgraceful. For the most part I was calm , unoffensive and just trying to get my point across.

As the equality issue was being brought up alot , I deemed it prudent to remind everyone of a ridiculous social gaffe a few years ago from the man who is most likely going to be our next Taoiseach. I mean seriously , how could the man be that stupid. I simply said:

“Lest we forget” and added the following link

Was deleted and i was blocked within an hour.

    This seems decidedly appropriate.

Majorly unimpressed with the entire attitude of whoever is moderating their page.

  • Abusive? is calling someone a coward abusive? I think erasing peoples questions and not answering them is an abuse of peoples free speech and right to answers. I think Lucinda’s comments are abusive to Gay people.

  • Fine Gael’s spokesperson is not being truthful in the above statement. I posted a comment which was deleted (and I was blocked from their site) even though the comment was in no way abusive. I simply stated my opinion that in failing to support equal rights for gay people, Fine Gael and Lucinda Creighton bear some responsibility for continuing homophobic bullying in schools. Hardly abusive language now is it?

  • I have e-mailed Fine Gael expressing my sadness at their view on the Irish language. They replied back with a generic e-mail. I then wrote back with three simple solutions and wanted their opinions on it. I got nothing. I e-mailed again, and got nothing. All my questions were well mannered.

I then went public on their web site and asked questions under the “have your say” part. I asked numerous questions about the Irish Language and Gay Marriage and challenged them. Not one of my comments was shown.
Fine Gael are going to undo all the hard work that Ireland has done to prevent homophobia in our schools.
Not one of my messages contained abusive wording. Not one! Fine Gael should be ashamed of themselves! Ashamed! If you make a decision, have the DECENCY to be accountable for you decisions.

  • FG will drop at least 5% after this farce.. Kenny has rehearsed every line and incapable of debating the issues. It’s depressing that he’ll still be Taoiseach after Friday. If only FG had a real statesman like Gareth Fitzgerald

  • It’s a bit rich thejournal.ie having a pop at another forum etc for censorship. I do believe you’re owned by the same company as Boards.ie? The forum renowned for censoring comments contrary to the views of the moderators. Kettles and pots anyone??

    • Lenny – Mods on Boards.ie are pretty much autonomous of the site’s owners and managers; the nature of the site is that each forum is treated as a standalone entity and there’s no central control exercised over them.

Testament to that would be the fact that one writer for TheJournal.ie – I won’t name them – has been given a ban from the site on a previous occasion, while posting in their professional capacity.

Either way, Boards.ie and TheJournal.ie might share an overall ownership structure but the day-to-day running of the sites, some tech administration aside, are totally divorced.

(I should add that I have no capacity to act as a spokesman for Boards.ie.)

  • How very logical of you, thanks for your input. Perhaps I should just have a coffee morning with the ‘girls’ and go back to being a 90s gay were nonsense such as wanting the same rights as every heterosexual couple have, wouldn’t have been discussed. You know. . . Discussed?

Fine Gael, by refusing to engage and censoring on a public fora – it is public if it is not set as private – are indicating that they will not stand up and give equal rights to minority groups. So not only are they censoring a blue and white facebook page, they are giving us a taste of what censoring will feel like to a large proportion of society should they get elected.

Might I also add that if Lucinda Creighton leaves her hand out to be slapped, it will be slapped.

  • “I am really concerned about the issue of marriage equality and the way it appears Lucinda Creighton has gone off script and said what the party has thought all along. Is it really a case of- you’ve got some rights and that’s good enough for you?”

and “Love how a trickle has become a flood. Keep it up everyone!”

Although they didn’t get deleted, those two comments got me removed from the group and blocked from commenting. Abusive?? And the vast majority of what went up yesterday was the same tone as the first comment I made, they only got flooded because they kept deleting people over and over. So offensive.

    I posted the following comment:

FG = FF Lite. If you really want to fight for Ireland why not put the REAL issue to the people and hold a referendum before we give ANY more money to the banks OR allow them to issue bonds in our name.

Banks have quietly issued a further 17 Billion this year alone.

First it was deleted, I then reposted and it was left up and still no answer on what their real position is.
My guess…? keep supporting the banks.

  • Gavan – it’s somewhat ironic that you post a story about Fine Gael taking down posted comments considering that you took down one of mine on this very site earlier today!

    Reply
    • As we discussed elsewhere, John, that’s because you used strong language that some readers reported as being offensive.

There’s a difference between censoring opinions and asking people to be mindful of the sensitivities of others. Our site has readers of all ages and people expect not to see coarse language when visiting, and correctly so.

Make a point without bad language and fewer people will get offended.

Why is it the Green party claims that there is no need for a referendum on Gay Marriage?

  • Is it just me or has The Journal being displaying a distinctly anti-FG bias lately?

    Reply
    • Alan – You’re not the first person to suggest this; while we regret that the party seems to be the subject of a disproportionate amount of stories in the past few weeks, that’s simply because the party has done more things to make itself newsworthy. If another party had had its website hacked, had provoked complaint over its policies on subjects like gay marriage, or had been criticised by voters for deleting comments on their public fora, we would cover those occasions and those parties equally.

We would also contend that the majority of our pieces (and certainly all of those we publish on TheJournal.ie itself, as opposed to those filed on The Daily Edge) don’t take an editorial line so if stories like this are deemed to be ‘anti-FG’ then, with respect, this is not at all the writer’s intention and is down to the interpretation of each reader.
