Gallery: Japan's tsunami repairs, six months on

Sunday marks the six-month anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that killed tens of thousands. The repairs are ongoing.

MUCH OF THE WORLD’S attention on Sunday will be focussed on the United States, for the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, but Sunday also marks another sombre remembrance – the six-month anniversary of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

But while the earthquake continues to take its toll on the Japanese economy – with the economy shrinking in the second quarter of 2011 as a result of the impact – the recovery effort is continuing apace, and with remarkable progress.

Here, via Japan’s Kyodo news agency, is a selection of photos showing the damage caused by the tsunami – and how the repairs are progressing at an incredible pace.
