MUCH OF THE WORLD’S attention on Sunday will be focussed on the United States, for the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, but Sunday also marks another sombre remembrance – the six-month anniversary of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
But while the earthquake continues to take its toll on the Japanese economy – with the economy shrinking in the second quarter of 2011 as a result of the impact – the recovery effort is continuing apace, and with remarkable progress.
Here, via Japan’s Kyodo news agency, is a selection of photos showing the damage caused by the tsunami – and how the repairs are progressing at an incredible pace.
