Gilmore pledges to ‘repair damage done’ as a result of flag protests

The Tánaiste was in Belfast today to meet with Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Theresa Villiers, along with the First Minister and Deputy First Minister.

TANAISTE AND MINISTER for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore met with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Theresa Villiers, in Belfast this morning.

The meeting, in response to the ongoing violence in Northern Ireland over the Union flag, also included meetings with First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

Following the meeting the Gilmore said:

Today’s meeting provided a welcome and timely opportunity to discuss the recent flag protests with the Secretary of State and the First Minister and Deputy First Minister and review developments towards calming the situation.
We stand ready to work to repair any damage done to the economy of Northern Ireland and the negative impact of the current unrest on Northern Ireland’s international reputation.

At the meeting Gilmore pledged his continued commitment to support his northern counterparts and to help identity the current crisis in addition to its underlying causes.
