Government tells Sinn Féin to be a ‘true Opposition’

Fergus O’Dowd told Sinn Féin to encourage its supporters to pay the charge to avoid further financial difficulties.

JUNIOR MINISTER AT the Department of the Environment Fergus O’Dowd has challenged Sinn Féin to be a “true Opposition” in the Dáil.

Speaking at a Private Members’ Business debate about the Household Charge this evening, O’Dowd argued that there was “no basis or justification” for the repeal of the recently-enacted legislation which introduced the €100 fee.

Sinn Féin put forward the Household Charge repeal bill for debate this evening. Environment and local government spokesperson Brian Stanley described the charge as “grossly unfair” because the “millionaire pays the same as the pensioner and the Taoiseach pays the same as a lone parent”.

As the only Fine Gael TD in the House, O’Dowd delivered a 30-minute speech to challenge some of the points raised by Sinn Féin and Independent deputies earlier in the evening.

He accused Sinn Féin of acting out of “pure populism” and asked it to “be accountable as a political party and to be a true opposition”.

Don’t encourage people to go into a more difficult place financially…encourage your supporters to pay the charge…that is the law of the land. Obey the law.

“The sad part of it is, people who listen to the No voice, they will end up in greater difficulty – not less,” he added, citing the large fines that could be imposed through the courts for the non-payment of the charge

Opposition members argued tonight that the Household Charge represents a triple-payment for local services. They have called for the €94.5 million already raised to be handed back to homeowners and urged Labour party members to support the action.

Another debate on the repeal bill will take place tomorrow evening at 7.30pm and a vote will be held at 9pm. However, as O’Dowd said tonight, it will almost certainly be voted down by the government majority.

A rally will be held outside Leinster House from 5pm tomorrow ahead of the vote.

  • Saw the debate. With Fianna Fail backing the Sinn Féin bill it is certainly going to put pressure on the Labour backbenchers. Time to stand up Labour to and show your true colours. Pale shade of pink? Or true blue-shirts? Are they going to stand by those that cannot pay or bondholders.

    • And btw time for Fergus O’Dowd to check his dictionary. At last we have a decent opposition in the Dáil. Sinn Féin, along with ULA are proving to be the best opposition we’ve had ever. They are really holding this inept government to account, and are the only ones speaking up for the people of Ireland.

    • Ye must have robbed the luck of the Irish as well mcbab because god knows we don’t have any. Felt really sorry for Ukraine having their goal disallowed. I hate to see injustice. Our pics might look alike mcbab but we are total opposites.

    • Off topic, but Ukraine were offside in the buildup to the “goal” so despite both the assistant and the guy on the line getting calls wrong it ended up with the right result. Back on topic, the lack of government tds during the debate shows their contempt for the electorate. The parties were elected on a mandate of no property tax yet once elected changed all that in the programme for government for which they have NO mandate. They should’ve put that programme before the people if they wanted to implement it. Typical lying politicians only interested in looking after their own bank accounts. FG/Lab are now the equals of FF when it comes to corruption and lies.

    • Ah Richard. You can’t interfere when I’m winning against mcbab, but back to topic. Are you sure he was offside? Not everybody understands the offside rule you know. Was he actually interfering with play? Was the part of the body that was offside capable of scoring a goal? If it was just the hand then that’s not deemed capable of scoring so the offside rule would not apply. In matters of football all these things must be considered. But I’m glad you agree that the household charge is unjust so we’ll say no more about it. :-P

  • I am sure James Connolly would be proud of what his Labour party has lowered itself to. If Labour are so sure that this is what their electorate voted them in for, why are they not polling their constituents. They are liars who gave up every sense of morality, once they got the whiff of the Ministerial perks and saw the pay-checks . The traitors will be eliminated by the electorate at the next election.

Why doesnt the government be truthful and tell its citizens that all rights are signed off to our oil and gas fields to oil giants and in return get a tiny share of the profits. Get that sorted instead of continuing with this unfair household tax

  • How about FG and Labour be TRUE representatives of the people, and follow through on the promises that got them elected!!

The repel and debate gave good reasons that the household charge was unfair, and gave very viable ralternatives to raise MORE than the household charge generates!

    • EXACTLY the first thing to go through my head when I read the story. A member of fine gael telling anybody to be accountable as a political party after lying their way to power and using their lack of accountability to threaten and bully our people is beyond contemptible.

How about your leader actually answers a question he’s asked in the dail instead of twisting and squirming around the issues lie the coward he is, Mr. O’Dowd??

    • Why did Sinn Féin and the United Left Alliance encourage people to break the law BEFORE they moved this Bill, i.e. before they exhausted the democratic channels?
As for Labour and FG election promises:
Both Lab and FG agreed with the terms set by the EU/IMF that Ireland has to reduce its deficit.
Labour: Said they’d do it with a 1:1 ratio between spending cuts and TAX INCREASES.
FG: Said they’d do it with a 3:1 ration between spending cuts and TAX INCREASES.
Budget 2012 gave us a ratio of 2:1 Spending cuts and TAX INCREASES.

They have a mandate from the people to do exactly what they’re doing now, and in a democracy you have to respect that, even if you don’t agree with it.

    • Actually Ignoreland, Pearse Doherty was constantly on the air during the campaign telling people that he would not ‘encourage’ people not to pay and that they would have to decide for themselves whether or not to do so.

      You know this, right?

    • Sorry Too True Left but here’s a copy of a resolution passed at the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis, taken straight from their website: http://www.sinnfein.ie/contents/23355
“This Ard Fheis calls on the Sinn Féin leadership to advise members of the public not to pay the Household Charge.”

    • Fergus O’Dowd should remember he is meant to be an Irishman and not a tool of outside interests. Ignoreland people voted FF out they did not give a mandate to FG/LAB to destroy Ireland to ensure foreign banks got their money back. Just like Kenny claiming that the yes vote on the fiscal treaty was a mandate for his policies another lie. God help Ireland we have a fool in charge worried about wandering about with a defaulter stamped on his forehead.

    • Sinn Fein Never told people not to pay the hhc . The whole lot have them sf TD’s and councillors have splinters on their A’s from sitting on the fence . Don’t get me wrong I am glad SF are bringing this Bill to the dail , but it is not done so for the greater good of the ordinary person or home owner . It is for the greater good of SF …. They will be building up for the next election . How ever I will be at the protest at the Dail tomorrow evening to support the Bill.

    • @ignoreland, funny the way you government supporters shout and accuse Sinn Fein and the left alliance about breaking the law, but none of you responded to the many people on here last week demanding an explanation as to why Fine Gael broke the law when they defrauded the tax payer of hundreds of thousands by paying their staff under the table for 9 years. You right wingers lies and half truths make my stomach churn.

All this tripe about SF playing the populist card well if what their saying is so popular would that not tell you it’s what the people want.
This government claim to have a mandate from the people, I’m sorry but they don’t both parties sold out their voters and the rest of us for that matter when they got a sniff of power.

It’s hoped the likes of his kind never ever get a seat in Government again. What’s more I’d like to see an emergency motion to scrap all their hefty pensions as compensation to the state for the remaining years of misery they will inflict.

No doubt about it SF are running populist lines aimed at attracting the votes of the angry, disenchanted and vulnerable. It’s a political tactic many opposition parties are adopting at the moment, riding a wave on anti-government sentiment. Think Tea Party in America, or the Murdoch backed Liberal party in Australia. Shout loud and shout often…….and say NO to everything.

    Reply
    • Yeah because its nothing got to do with the fact vast numbers in our country are finding hard to survive and have no more to give. Why would we expect any of the TDs we voted for to actually be our voice, huh?

      Reply
    • And also with luxury that they won’t ever have to actually try and implement any of their policies or deal with the inconvenient practilaties of governance.
I’ve no doubt that in decade or so (maybe sooner) SF will be in power but watch how far to the centre they’ll have moved by then.

      Reply
    • It is the nature of the opposition to oppose. Just because FG was asleep at the wheel during the “boom years” that created our current crisis does not mean the opposition are actually supposed to keep quiet and support all government policies.
