Ireland remembers 9/11 - events take place across the country this weekend

We have a round-up of commemorative events taking place across the country this weekend.

THERE IS A host of events taking place across Ireland this weekend to mark the 10th anniversary of the attacks on New York City’s World Trade Centre.

As Ireland remembers, tribute concerts, masses and exhibitions have been organised across the country.

The US Ambassador to Ireland Dan Rooney has already laid a floral tribute outside the US Embassy in Dublin to remember those who died in the terrorist attacks.

The embassy, however, will hold its official memorial on Sunday at the RDS. The event is by invitation only and, for security reasons, no further details are being released to the media.

Here are some other events that are happening across the country this weekend:

-As Ireland faces the USA in the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand on Sunday, the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) is hosting a special breakfast in the Aviva Stadium. The event, however, is also by invitation only.

A minute’s silence will be held ahead of the game.

-Heroism and Horror: A Multi-Faith Commemoration Service of 9/11 will be broadcast live on RTÉ One from the Dublin Fire Brigade Training Centre on Sunday morning at 11am.

President Mary McAleese, US Ambassador Dan Rooney and Dublin’s Lord Mayor Andrew Montague will all attend the multi-faith service.

-Ground Zero 360, a photographic exhibition, opened at the National Museum of Ireland last month. It features the images taken by New York-based Irish photographer Nicola McClean on September 11, 2001.

Open Tues-Sat 10am to 5pm and Sunday 2pm to 5pm.

-9/11: Ireland Remembers, a commemorative concert, will be held at the Convention Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Beginning at 4pm, the benefit concert will present a programme of music by Ireland’s Enchiriadis Treis Choir and the National Philharmonia Orchestra.

The event will also incorporate spoken reflections delivered by invited guests from Irish public life and the arts.

Proceeds will go to The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children in Dublin. Tickets (€20-€25) are currently available through Ticketmaster.

-The Tallaght Youth Band has organised a memorial concert, which will take place on Sunday from 6pm at the National Basketball Arena.

Soprano singer Regina Nathan, the Garda Band and the Dublin Fire Brigade Pipe and Drum Band will also take part in the concert.

-In Westmeath, the Midland American Auto Club is presenting An All American Car, Truck and Bike Show to remember the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

As well as the 500 vehicles on show, there will also be kids’ entertainment, face painting, hot food and sale stalls.

The automobiles on view include movie cars, big rigs, muscle cars, hot rods and military and police vehicles.

The event will take place in Kilbeggan from 11am to 5pm. There will be a minute silence from 1.42pm.

-In Sligo, a commemoration ceremony has been organised at the National Monument to the 69th Brigade and Brig. Gen Michael Corcoran in Ballymote.

Former NYPD Captain and Donegal native Paul McCormack, who was on duty at the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001 will attend the ceremony.

Musical tributes will be performed by the Sligo Orpheus Choir and a wreath will be laid at the monument, which also incorporates a piece of steel girder from the Twin Towers.

The event will take place at 1.30pm.

-The World Trade Centre…A New Rising, another commemorative photographic exhibition, opened on September 3 as part of Phizzfest in Phibsborough.

The photographs taken by Joe Woolhead, an Irish citizen living in New York, on September 11 and 12 will be on display at the local fire station in Phibsborough.

The Finglas-born photographer has lived in NYC for the past 20 years, where his images have been published in the New York Times, Time Magazine, The New Yorker and Esquire Magazine.

The exhibit will be open daily from 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm.

    The photographic exhibition will run as part of Phizzfest, Phibsborough€™s Community Arts Festival until September 11 in the indoor hand-ball alley housed behind the Fire Station in Phibsborough.
