We're all going on a summer holiday...

Insurance expert says improving economy will encourage to Irish people flock abroad this year.

IRISH PEOPLE ARE beginning to take foreign holidays again after laying low and keeping it local during the downturn, a travel insurance expert has said.

Arlene Tierney of holiday cover specialist getcover.ie said that there has been a pronounced uptick in the amount of people seeking multi-trip travel insurance.

Tierney said: “During the period between 2011 and 2013 there was a 15 per cent swing towards single trips. which was a sure sign of the times we were in – people simply could not afford to travel as much during the year.”

However, an improvement in our economic fortunes is driving a reverse in this behaviour, with multi trip policy sales up by eight per cent in the last six months.

She said that sales of multi-trip policies are a good barometer of how much people will travel on foreign holidays.

The average premium for travel insurance has reduced by around 10 per cent since 2011, Tierney said.

Tierney also warned that people should check what is covered by their travel insurance policies before traveling, as many don’t look after items such as mobile phones, or certain activities like trekking or kayaking.

Are you planning on taking a summer holiday abroad this year?
