Race for the Áras

Latest opinion poll sees Norris ahead

Although his nomination is still not secure, David Norris leads the race to be the next President of Ireland, according to the latest opinion poll.

DESPITE NOT YET securing a nomination, David Norris heads the pack in the race for the Áras, according to the latest opinion poll.

In the poll carried out by Millward Brown Lansdowne, Norris leads with 27 per cent support.

The Senator is chased by Michael D. Higgins on 18 per cent and Sinn Féin candidate Martin McGuinness on 15 per cent.

The poll found support for Mary Davis at 15 per cent, while fellow Independent candidate Seán Gallagher is on 11 per cent.

Fine Gael’s Gay Mitchell is on 10 per cent and Dana Rosemary Scallon comes in last on 4 per cent.

RTÉ reports that the online poll used a sample size of 500, smaller than the usual 1,000 respondents. The company said that as a result the margin of error is greater at plus or minus 4 per cent.

Last weekend’s poll portrayed an entirely different picture as it was taken before McGuinness entered the race. Former MEP Scallon was also excluded.

Next week will be a busy one for county and city councils as 12 meetings take place to discuss nominating either Dana or Norris as candidates for the election on October 27.
