A MAN HAS BEEN charged with murder of Mairead Moran, the 26-year-old woman killed in the shop where she worked in Kilkenny city on Thursday evening.

Mairead was working in the Holland & Barrett store in the Market Cross Shopping Centre when she was attacked.

The victim, who was originally from the village of Kilmoganny in Co Kilkenny, was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A 27-year-old man appeared at a special sitting of Kilkenny District Court this afternoon.

Local broadcaster KCLR reports that that Shane Smyth, of Evans Lane in Kilkenny, was charged with murder and remanded in custody to appear again in court at Cloverhill next Friday, 16 May.

The judge ordered that a full psychiatric assessment be carried out.

Locals have been speaking of their shock at the incident, and family friends have been paying tribute to Mairead — who had just been told she was getting a promotion at the healthstore.
