This is a serious issue, so many cyclists don’t cycle responsibly, running red lights, ignoring pedestrian crossings and cycling on the foot path. I’ve been hit by cyclists on the footpath before, luckily i wasn’t seriously hurt just bruised.

I hope that the man hurt recovers and that those cyclists who behave so irresponsibly think about their actions instead to having a rant about how they are, by virtue of being cyclists saving the planet.

I’m all for more cycle lanes as long as they are actually used by cyclists.

  • There is no law to force cyclists to use cycle lanes. As a responsible cyclist I can honestly say that a lot of the cycle lanes are full of broken glass, there’s walkers 3 abreast at times oblivious to the world etc.some drivers who you would know to look at never cycled an exercise bike never mind on the roads think they can dictate the road traffic laws! True there is cyclists who break red Lights, never have reflective clothing or lights who give the vast majority of decent cyclists a bad name .

    • As a pedestrian, motorist, cyclist and motorcyclist, I agree with you. The cycle lanes are not maintained and are dangerous. Douglas is very busy, has a large elderly population and small roads. People should be more careful than usual in that area.

Mistakes are made by every group of road user. It is awful for a man of that age to be hit, his recovery will be difficult. To the cyclists credit, at least he seems to have stayed around rather than legging it.

    • Stephen, I think there is a law about the use of cycle lanes. Cycle lanes that have an unbroken lane are mandatory lanes. Cyclists *must* use them and cars are prohibited from crossing that line into them. Cycle lanes with a broken white line do not have these restrictions.

Apart from that, I totally agree with your post. The design and upkeep of lanes is appalling and I understand that the govt. are going to be un-madatorying lanes because of the poor condition of them.

  • Rush hour traffic accident with no clear indication of culpability of cyclist. Yet, people feel the need to rant about cyclists. Funny, drivers never seem to get the same treatment no matter how many early morning, Bank Holiday weekend pileups there are. Have a feeling that broad notion that cyclists are effete lefties will continue to persist for a while yet. Harumph!

    • Exactly. Had this been a motorist, there may have been some criticism of the individual motorist, but none of the slurs we are seeing directed here solely against motorists generally as a group of road users simpliciter. Even had it been a motorcyclist there wouldn’t have been anything like the reaction.

Just a matter of time before this happens on Stephens Green too. Idiots cycling the wrong way on a one-way street into hordes of people exiting the LUAS. Gardai are either unaware out don’t give a f.

    • I know the place you’re talking about. You’re wrong though, it’s not 1-way there. A cycle lane dumps cyclists out onto the wrong side of the road shocking drivers and cyclists alike.

It is an accident waiting to happen, but it’s caused by half baked city planning.

  • Happily quite a rare event, pedestrian-cyclist collisions that is. More cycle lanes please!

    • Why? most cyclist don’t use them. On Monday driving throught the Phoenix Park twards castleknock, two cycle lanes side by side on the left of the road, and cyclist were still on the road! If you want cycle lanes, then pay a cycle lane tax to have them built properly.

    • I bet you haven’t spent much time trying to cycle in the cycle lanes in the Phoenix Park. Give it a go and then come back and see if your ignorance of the reason still exists.

BTW, hope the man makes a full and speedy recovery.

    • not as rare as you think try driving or walking along the canal at ballsbridge
a lot of agresive cycliest that ignore rules and common sense.

    • @Ronan no one pays road tax in Ireland. we pay motor tax based on size of engine and it’s not ringfenced so every tax payer pays for the upkeep of the network.

    • Ronan – I just noticed in your post you mention that there are “two cycle lanes side by side on the left of the road.” There are not. There is one cycle lane and one footpath. The cycle lane is the one nearest the road and has graphics of a bike on it every 100m or so. The paved path further in from the road is a footpath. It is the same on both sides of the road – cycle lane near the road, footpath further in past the trees.

Just to elaborate on my previous point, as there seems to be a number of people who “disagree” with me, the reason that the cycle lanes in the Phoenix Park are largely unusable is that there are people walking on them. Cycling at a conservative speed of 25km/h when you have varieties of people walking at ~5km/h is not workable….unless somebody can suggest how it is?

    • Guys the road where this happened has a narrow footpath and the road itself has two lanes. A cycle path cannot be added as they cant be added on alot of city/town streets due to their narrow nature. please god this man makes a full recovery.

    • I agree with Brian. The big problem in this country is that cycle facilities are not designed for the convenience of cyclists but for the convenience of motorists. This plays into motorist’s attitudes (for instance, if a cyclist leaves a cycle lane to avoid a pothole or a pedestrian, he can expect horns to be sounded, and that’s not even mentioning parked cars). I’d agree entirely about Phoenix Park too. I’ve had abuse shouted at me by people too many times as they walk through the cycle lane and I pass them by. While there is a need a greater appreciation of shared space on our roads and more responsible road use by all, that is entirely aside from this story, and I really hope that poor pedestrian gets well soon. I’m sure the cyclist and the poor man’s family are hoping the same.

  • That’s awful, hope the man recovers quickly.
However, it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. So many cyclists have ZERO respect for pedestrians- I was almost run over by one last week in Dublin City Centre when I was crossing the street (with the light in my favour).
This stuff happens constantly, it’s time to start dishing out penalty points to reckless cyclists.

Cyclists are well known to be the biggest menace to Irish society, killing and maiming millions of Irish people each year! Forget the penalty points, we need sharia law for these clowns.
