WHAT ARE OUR politicians doing in the halls of Leinster House?

TheJournal.ie lets you know with our guide to what’s coming up to the Dáil, Seanad and various Oireachtas committees today.

DÁIL

Eamon Gilmore takes the morning’s Leaders’ Questions at 10:30am, before TDs agree to the day’s agenda before kicking back into the Finance Bill, which turns the Budget’s tax changes into law. This should be totally wrapped up by 2:30pm.

TDs are back at 3pm to discuss more Budget changes – this time making permanent increases to motor tax rates, with a final vote due at 7pm. The day then finishes with debate on four topical issues and Dail questions to the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton, at 7:48pm.

The day’s Dáil business can all be viewed here.

SEANAD

A simple day in the Seanad: 75 minutes of discussion on the Seanad’s future agenda (10:30am) before the Seanad Public Consultation Committee takes over the room to hold a three-hour discussion on “change-makers in Ireland“.

The day’s Seanad business can all be viewed here.

COMMITTEES

Five committee meetings help to round off the week:

  • The Health Committee gets the day rolling at 9:30am with all four health insurers attending to offer their thoughts to the forthcoming health insurance levy to fund the risk equalisation scheme. (Watch here.)
  • Also meeting at 9:30am, the Agriculture committee is briefed on next week’s meeting of EU agriculture ministers – where Simon Coveney will secure agreement for mandatory DNA testing of beef products – and will also get a six-monthly report on agricultural developments in the EU. (Watch here.)
  • At 10am, the Public Accounts Committee gets an unusual job: checking out the spending habits of the Revenue Commissioners, and how it collects its money. (Watch here.)
  • At 11am, representatives from the Human Rights Consortium address the Good Friday Agreement committee on a possible Bill of Rights for the people of Northern Ireland. Against the backdrop of the flags dispute, the right to self-identity to a political allegiance will make an interesting talking point. (Watch here.)
  • FInally, at 2pm the EU Affairs committee meets representatives from TASC and UCC who will discuss financial and budgetary integration in the EU, and ensuring that this does not conflict with democratic accountability. (Watch here.)

  • Our current motor tax rates are scandalous. I don’t know of another country in the world that pay the frankly obscene rates we do. And on top of VRT and petrol prices! How long will it be before we’re all driving around in one-litre Fiat Pandas? About the same time I guess as our highway centre reservations will be displaying complusory portraits of Enda Kenny?

  • Are they planning on increasing motor tax rates again under the guise of protecting the environment? “The public don’t react when we do this so let’s keep raising it”…….f***ing clowns!

Enda kenny sits in his office with Merkels mural on the wall. He pulls the curtains and sees that there is no riots or protestors outside government buildings. First thought for the day. ‘All quiet, let’s tax them some more then ‘

  • Whatever happened to the abolition of the Seanad? Is there not a referendum due on that soon?

  • And I presume they’ll discuss and agree that people earning just over €25,000 will need all their children’s allowance to survive. They’ll decide that the poor and low paid have no more to give and will rubbish yesterday’s report. Our government has a heart after all, doesn’t it???

  • We are really to quiet compared to other countries , Perhaps awake up call is needed
A GENERAL STRIKE FOR A FULL WEEKEND SHUT THE PLACE DOWN ONE OUT ALL OUT NO TRANSPORT NO AIRPORTS NOTHING FOR A FEW DAYS MIGHT WAKE THEM UP ??????????

  • They do not seem to understand that by increasing motor taxes they WILL MAKE PEOPLE UNEMPLOYED OR BREAK THE LAW BECAUSE THE LOW PAID WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PAY to keep a car on the road ,
People that start work at unsociable times when public transport is not available WHEN THE TDS ARE STILL IN BED or in the case of Security officers/guards, that have to go to places where public transport does not operate.these are the people that will be hurt most or even have to give up there job as transport is required and they can nolonger afford it. NO SECURITY COMPANY PAYS MILEAGE OR EXPENSES TOWARDS FUEL OR TAXES FOR A CAR.INFACT SOME SECURITY COMPANIES CHARGE THERE STAFF TO GIVE THEM A LIFT IN A COMPANY VEHICLE MADNESS AT ITS BEST AND NO THOUGHT AT ALL FOR THE LOW PAID.

    • Haven’t been able to tax my car since November! Not happy about it but I can’t afford it. Need it to get to work as I live 25 miles from work and no public transport! Have to soon but then another bill will not be paid. Going around in circles!

    • I am of the opinion that they don’t care …… and as long as we have a gripe they can do whatever they like …no proof but that’s my opinion …. 1.1.billion transferred into a state owned bank pension fund and frontline workers getting allowances cut ! …… equality ?????

  • England here I come. What costs me over 1000 euro in Ireland to tax would cost me 275 sterling in England. Scandalous.

  • We need to get out on the streets! ASAP!!

  • Where are the Irish people on the streets?! Take a look in Bulgaria, 11 days general country wide protests forced the government to resign and new emergency governement to be formed. People have lost faith and hope in any of the political parties and are demanding new constitutional changes with direct democracy and new blood in the politics not the same old crowd shifting chairs for decades! Same story in Ireland people should be out and protesting not complaining online of not being able to pay bills and manage their financial lives!!!

  • The Agriculture Committee should be interesting.

“My brother is innocent” Minister says during discussion on horsemeat!

  • Out on the streets will never happen because the govt has won in pitting worker against worker. .. no cohesion between public and private. .. just a divide and conquer technique that most are swallowing. …
We need to unite first but to many are just struggling in to defend their own corner just…

    • that’s the idea …keep your nose in the dirt so you don’t see what they are really up to….
we use our children’s allowance to pay our mortgage …they cut the allowance we cut the mortgage.
they’re both the same beast the government and the bondholders …imagine if we found out that the politicians had their own fake company for investing in bonds …that’s when the fun would start …not implying anything , but with adultery in the vatican and Dominic Strauss kahn ,head of the I.M.F. when we got a bailout, up on pimping charges …i’d be prepared to believe anything … I wonder was the government jet or any of our government on “official business” when Kahn was allegedly throwing those parties …I will never know …but air traffic control might !

heres another Dail debate that might interest a few people
by the way to all you pet owners out there ….here’s a question …If there is horse meat in the burgers where do they get the rabbit for your pet food ? …or who’s testing pet food or shepherds pie , or the meat on pizzas, or kebab meat ……. just asking …not implying anything but I’m surprised the animal rights groups are not calling for a test on dog and cat food …..
