More deaths as protests against anti-Islam film spread

Tunisia, Sudan, Yemen and more have all seen protests over an amateur film that is said to be anti-Islam.

PROTESTS HAVE SPREAD to Sudan, Tunisia, Qatar and Gaza over an American film said to be anti-Islam, with seven people reported to have died in total.

Al Jazeera reports that there were three deaths in Sudan, two in Lebanon and two in Yemen following protests against the film.

It said that protests began in Tunis after prayers today, when groups attempted to reach the US embassy and enter it. Police tried to push them back but windows were smashed.

The US embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, was entered by protesters earlier today, and the German and British embassies were also attacked, said the BBC.

There have also been protests in Gaza in the town Rafah, in Qatar, Cairo and Doha. A KFC restaurant was set fire to in northern Lebanon.

‘Sam Bacile’

Yesterday, journalists gathered outside the Los Angeles home of a 55-year-old Coptic Christian, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, in the city’s southern suburbs, after reports he had directed the movie that triggered the protests in the Muslim world.

He is thought to have uploaded a trailer for the movie to YouTube under the pseudonym “Sam Bacile” called “Innocence of the Muslims” that featured an actor playing Mohammed, who is portrayed as a drunken and predatory bisexual.

It was apparently shot in English, but a version of the trailer was dubbed into Egyptian Arabic and caused great offence in the Arab world.

Nakoula is said to be under police protection.

Afghanistan

Hundreds of Afghans — some shouting “Death to America” — burned the US flag and an effigy of President Barack Obama today during a protest against the film outside the eastern city of Jalalabad.

Since it surfaced on the Internet, the film has prompted violent protests at US embassies in the Middle East. The American ambassador and three other US staff members were killed when the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya was attacked.

Mohammad Zhirullah, a protester who spoke to The Associated Press on the phone from the site, said the crowd called on Afghan President Hamid Karzai to sever relations with the United States.

When the movie was shown around the world, it broke the heart of every Muslim. We condemn this act and those who are behind it should be put on trial and should be hanged to death. … It cannot be tolerated by the Afghan people.

These are making it seem more likely that the ‘Arab Spring’ was little more than angry people doing violent things and using any excuse they could find.

  • I watched the film earlier on youtube. It’s so bad it couldn’t have been made for any reason other than provocation. It’s actually so badly made that it’s almost funny. The whole thing is just ridiculous, and the reactions of the Muslim extremists are confirming that they are actually what the beginning of the film calls them out to be!

Always amazes me what the effect religion has on people. Normal rational thinking goes out the window.the sooner people realise the harm, violence, hurt and pain that religion causes the better. Unfortunately it may not happen in my lifetime or ever. You don’t need religion to tell you what is right or wrong or how to love for that matter.

  • I am sick and tired of the far-leftists blaming the video-maker (even if he is a jerk) and all the innocent people being killed/attacked at these embassies. The video should be the last thing to outrage you that’s if you have any compassion as a decent human being. Instead of being self-righteous/arrogant and having a complex about coming off as anti-Muslim. The people being killed/attacked had nothing to do with the making of this YOUTUBE video what-so-ever. Even if they did, so? It’s call freedom of speech/democracy; does that matter? Radical-Muslims (a large minority) have just taken advantage of the Libya situation to riot, murder, and destroy. On top of it this starts on September 11; purposely trying to hurt the 9/11 families. If you are saying “the video was so horrible” “I would be outraged too,” “I can understand why they are upset.” “America’s foreign policy is the reason for all this.” Then you are just as bad as those killing innocent people; for condoning such behavior while saying you’re not condoning it. Is the US, in Sudan, Kuwait, or Kashmir to have their embassies invaded; that is an act of war. What does Germany have to do with this? Nothing. RIP all those who have been murdered. I wish all the people in the American embassies in the Middle East the best of luck, safety, and good fortune. God Bless America the same nation (it has its flaws) that welcomes people from all over the world (including the Middle Eastern Muslims) to live in a nation where one can practice their religion without fear, voice their opinions without persecution, can make YouTube videos without being killed, and all those who flee discrimination/genocide/persecution.

“He was one of the leaders of al-Qaeda, and he was killed in June. And the point was that people were saying there will be retaliation, and they choose the very same date of the September the 11th. So it might be that this connection was in fact used with the symbol at the same time we’re remembering what happened in the States. Add to this that what we have here is very much people who are behind the movie, and it’s very important to check who is behind the movie. What do they want exactly? They were using exactly the same symbol, 11 years later, just before the election, to put the president, also, Barack Obama, and the United States onto something which is a psychological pressure by releasing this and hoping that there will be reactions. It’s a provocation. And I think that here we have something which is very important for us is, first, to condemn what happened, the killing of the ambassador and what is happening in the embassies around the—in the Muslim-majority countries, to start with this, but also to understand that there are people from behind the scenes who are playing on symbols, emotional politics, and pushing toward something which is a clash.”

    • Adrian, I agree that the video is very low and I do think it is trying to play on people’s emotions, fears, and incite hatred. I find it also very disgusting that the maker would put out this false person of being an Israeli-American; which hints he might be anti-Semitic. Also that he made insensitive remarks while innocent people are being killed, that he was going to make more videos; that just escalates the violence. But at the same time I believe in freedom of speech/Democracy; under the US Constitution he has every right to make these videos regardless of his intentions. Radical-Muslims in America spew a lot of hate as well: anti-Christian, anti-Jew, anti-American, anti-West, cheer the 9/11 attacks on the streets, and burn American flags. Under the US Constitution they are allowed to do this. There is also a lot of propaganda/hate speech coming online from these countries where embassies are being bombed/attacked; its total double standards. Other people are not going crazy over them; they are just sulking on YouTube, FB, news websites, etc. I think people like Derek who post such comments are cruel, mean-spirited, and hateful people; especially at a time like this. His comments aren’t exactly accurate or fair; he feels the need to lash out at me because of his rage with what I wrote. I can understand why he sympathizes with the people carrying out these horrible acts; from what he says.

There are other nations in this world that aren’t exactly peaceful; that people could be condemning, but America seems to be everybody’ favorite. Yet they live, visit, enjoy, and use all things that come from America; without any hesitation. This article is about American/European embassies being attacked, bombed, terrorized, and killed. You’re entitled to think America is terrorists, evil, murderers, or whatever. But I find it very low of both of you to be putting out this argument at this time; instead of condemning what is happening. I’m going to leave it at that, since I know this conversation isn’t going to go anywhere good other than back and forth insults. Which I have no desire in participating in, thank you.

I saw the film, it’s clearly partisan and badly written, produced etc but not altogether inaccurate. Mohammed was no love thy neighbour merchant, well, he was at the start while he was a minority in a multicultural and tolerant society but then he got his own kingdom and charged protection money from minorities there so that they would be tolerated. Failure to pay this means you’re fair game in the house of peace (muslim territory). The rest of the world, which is awaiting inevitable islamic conquest is called the house of war. I doubt he’d be too upset at the kind of violent thuggery taking place, it’s fair to say he was quite a fan of it in his day. Mohammed who supposedly only wrote down the exact words dictated by god is referred to as the most perfect person that has ever lived and whose example all should follow…yeah right, Allah wrote that book… egomaniacal, bull5hitting warlord much?

  • If anyone takes the time to visit the Chester Beatty library and check the history of Islamic texts, some early ones actually depicted Mohamed (bbuh). A later text has him on a horse/donkey/ginnet (not sure) and his head is blurred green – their version of the halo at the time. In later texts, he vanishes. So, it was not always the case that Muhamed (bbuh)could not be depicted. Someone decided that from here on, it would not be.

Same thing happened in Christianity when Calvinest reformers banned religious imagery and also many years before, when Zen cleansed Mahayana Buddism from its pagentry and iconography, although in Zen, the statue of the Buddha is still revered (to focus the mind on o t).

What was done Sara Azmeh Rasmussen by “moderate” Muslims is outrageous; especially that it happened in Ireland and nothing was done about it. No Irish media covered it because they are extremely “fair” when reporting and not selective; only the Norwegian media covered the Sara Azmeh Rasmussen story.

    • Many people in the west (see Sharia law in the West) are trying to make it illegal to criticise Islam or Islamism. Briefly, criticising people’s genes is wrong. You can’t change your genes. You can’t help being born white, black, Arab, or whatever. But criticising people’s memes is ok – indeed it is what free speech is all about. You can change your memes. Being born an Arab Muslim doesn’t mean you can’t adopt western values, be tolerant of gays, Jews and atheists, even abandon Islam altogether. There is an extraordinary modern idea that we should “respect” other people’s beliefs. Often it is suggested that we should “respect” Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism or other religions, simply because they are old, or have lots of followers. This shows a basic lack of understanding of what a free society is. A free society is one in which you have the right to believe nonsense, and I have the right to call it nonsense. You don’t have to “respect” my stupid beliefs. And I don’t have to “respect” yours. But we both must agree to leave the other alone to believe what they want in peace. So many so-called “liberals” fail to understand this basic building block of a western liberal society. How the accusation of “Islamophobia” is used to silence atheists, unbelievers and moderate Muslims.

These extremist do not represent all Muslims, in fact they are a very small proportion of them. This was designed as a propagandist tool to create an image of Muslims for the west to cling on to in the hope of creating an even more of a divide between the west and middle east. Disgusting game!

Its a culturally diverse country where the standard of living aint that bad if only for the murdering sanctions placed on the country. The people in charge use religion forcefuly to exert control but its the same all over the middle east. Iran should be the least of our worries regarding WW3. I do think the reaction and killings are terrible but judging by the comments here, it is easy to see why extremists see all Christians as oppressors of their faith.

    • Understand the insult? Cop on like. No insult deserves retribution like that. If I tell you that Jesus was a shitbag looney are you going to be calling for my head or blowing up my house?

Christians as oppressors of their faith? Is that supposed to be a joke or something? Look up the demographics and history of the majority-Islamic countries. It’s the Muslims who oppress other religions. Besides Turkey which is relatively secular; in Iran, Egypt and until recently Syria, other religions are ‘tolerated’. Not that they enjoy equal status – but just tolerated.

      Reply
    • I agree with you Barry, I don’t have any religous beliefs but thats my buisness, I don’t expect others to have my atheism imposed on them because I say so but Muslims demand everyone else to follow the rules of their religion. You just ridiculed Jesus, you can, you have free speech. But if I were to say the same things about Muhammad or Allah the Journal may delete my comment, possibly fearing retaliation from radical muslims, who would undoubtedly like to kill me… if I did say that. Which I didn’t
The upshot of all this is that, whether we agree with it or not, most people will not speak out against Islam or question it the same way they would any other religon because we all know how the radical muslims will react. Violently. It’s perfectly fine to watch satire like Father Ted and The Life of Brian, Sacha Baron Cohen even manages to get away with playing tyrannical Islamic dictators, but if some radical muslim half way around the world even hears that someone drew a cartoon or made a half arsed movie about Islam then every muslim in the vicinity has to attack the nearest Western embassy.
If muslims want to live a life dedicated to Allah, fine, but don’t expect the rest of us to do the same, and for the love of Allah get a sense of humor, lighten up, chillax. Get a life lads.

      Reply
    • @Marc Did you read what I said? I wasn’t defending radical muslims, what I was saying was that they are basically trying to demand everyone, everywhere conforms to the laws of Islam. Fook that. While we can say what we want about any other religon, some may take issue with it, but nobody is going to slaughter people they don’t know because someone in the victims country happened to draw a cartoon that offends… or so they were told because they didn’t actually see it.
I believe any religon that tells its followers to kill in its name is a serious threat to the world, and Islam has always done this. At the slighest provocation they’re off saying this offends them or that offends them. Fine. Be offended, get the crayons out in the Mosque’s and have a great huff for the afternoon, but why hurt people. When they decide, and it is a decision, to become violent and kill in the name of their religon they become a threat, to peace, to the West and to the world in general. Sooner rather than later the threat of radical Islam has to be met rather that complied with.
