THE MOTHER OF Barry Davis Ryan has spoken of her hope that her son’s body will be recovered so he can be given a proper burial.
The 21-year-old went missing over a week ago, when his father and girlfriend were drowned in an accident in Baltimore.
A major search-and-rescue operation is underway in Baltimore. Yesterday, the call was put out for experienced current divers to join in the search.
The search continues in Baltimore, with plans tomorrow and Friday to comb the Eastern Hole “inch by inch”, said RTÉ.
Baltimore Lifeboat Station has cancelled its planned lifeboat house centenary celebration in light of the tragic events.
While his father Barry Ryan and girlfriend Niamh O’Connor’s bodies have been recovered, Barry Davis Ryan’s body has still not been found.
Speaking to RTÉ News last night, Barry Davis Ryan’s mother Ann Davis said of her son:
We just want to give him a decent burial. We have to get him back.
She outlined how it is believed a freak wave knocked into the trio and her daughter Sharon while they were fishing. Sharon was told by her father Barry Davis to run for help.
The scale of the search effort didn’t become clear to Ann Davis until later that evening, she said.
I heard that two were gone and Barry was missing.
What can you say. I still can’t believe it. [I'm] trying to come to terms with it.
The loss is huge. I’ve lost two of my loved ones. Barry, the dad, was a very spiritual, very intelligent man. My son was a lovely boy, very intelligent as well.
She described her son’s girlfriend Niamh O’Connor as “a beautiful girl, lovely laugh, very happy. Happy go lucky girl. Just beautiful… They were soulmates”.
