JUSTICE MINISTER ALAN Shatter has extended his sympathies to the family of Garda Sergeant Feargal McHugh who died tragically earlier this week.
The Wicklow-based Garda Sergeant died in a single-car collision near Newtownmountkennedy as he was coming off duty on Monday morning.
Speaking from Australia on the occasion of the removal of the 49-year-old’s remains to the Holy Rosary Church in Greystones, Shatter said:
I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the family of Sergeant McHugh on this sudden loss. I would also like to extend my condolences to his colleagues in the Garda Síochána.
The Minister also said that the Garda Síochána has lost a dedicated member who was known throughout the Arklow community he served.
McHugh’s son has recently joined the Garda Reserve and Shatter praised him for carrying on a “proud tradition of service in the family”.
The Éire Óg GAA Club, of which McHugh was an active member, also passed on its deepest sympathies and condolences to the McHugh family following the tragic death.
Monday’s accident occurred at about 8am at Kiladreenan on the N11, between exit 12 and exit 13.
The removal mass will be held at 7pm this evening and his burial will take place at Springfield Cemetery in Bray on Friday morning.
