A RALLY WILL be held by taxi drivers at Dáil Éireann this afternoon to highlight concerns proposed in a consultation paper on reforms to the industry that is being considered by the government.

The National Private Hire & Taxi Association has called on all drivers and associations to show support at the rally today.

The reforms would include the introduction of a local area hackney system, lowering of entry level standards for wheelchair accessible vehicles and credit card transaction costs being imposed on drivers.

It is also proposed that a number of key taxi ranks in Dublin be removed.

In a statement, the association said questions have not been answered about supports drivers would be entitled to while out of work if they are penalised in the new PSV taxi penalty points system with possible increases in fines from €40 to between €100 and €500.

Drivers and various associations are expected to gather at Dáil Éireann at 1.30pm today.
