Teenager dies after sand dune accident at Dingle Peninsula

Gardaí say the incident was a tragic accident.

THE TEENAGE WOMAN who was hospitalised after a sand dune collapsed on top of her at Dingle Peninsula in Kerry yesterday has died.

Gardaí have confirmed that the 19-year-old woman died in hospital earlier today.

She had become trapped under the sand dune at around 3pm yesterday. It’s believed this happened after she had been participating in a sport which involves digging a hole in a sand dune and jumping into it from higher up.

Emergency services who arrived on the scene managed to pull the woman from under the sand and transfer her to Tralee General Hospital by ambulance where she died from her injuries earlier today.

Gardaí have confirmed the incident is being investigated but it is being treated as a tragic accident.

This is very tragic. To think she was playing and having a ball in her youth that it could lead to such a terrible out come. I’m very sorry for her family and friends. May the angels guide her to peaceful rest.

Some people just dont realise the danger of sand or more importantly the weight of it. It sickens me to see people digging holes and putting people into them especially kids.If they collapse you have a very short time span to get them out and you’re usually digging with your bare hands, don’t get me wrong I like the craic on the beach as much as anybody but it can be a very dangerous place.RIP and god love her family and loved ones.

@Declan A young girl is dead, as a result of having a bit of (misplaced, perhaps) fun at the beach. All that appears to concern you is red thumbs? You’ve a lot to be worried about.

Poor girl, thoughts are with her family and friends. I was once nearly drowned on this beach, caught on a strong current and my dad rescued me. Could have been alot different. You’d nearly forget that for all the craic it is, the beach can be a dangerous place. RIP.

this is so sad, I have such happy memories of days and hours playing on those exact dunes, as do my own kids, we even have names for them…..what a tragic accident, my thoughts go out to this girl’s family

  The way I see it there are two reasons why someone would give a thumbs down to messages of condolence in these types of tragic stories…either it was a ‘thumbing accident’ or the person is a dick and gets kicks from the attention. Either way…NO NEED TO COMMENT especially as attention may fuel these fools.
  More importantly my thoughts go out to this poor family in their time of sorrow.

What a horrible tragedy. Didn’t something similar happen in West Cork recently, except with a less tragic outcome? While I would baulk at any nanny-state attempts to ban this “sport” it might be a good idea to widely advertise how dangerous it can be. Anyway, my condolences to her family. RIP.
