GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #MICHAELA: As the trial of two men for the murder of Michaela McAreavey continues in Mauritius, the Harte and McAreavey families have issued a statement asking people to pray for husband John McAreavey, stating that they are “very distressed and dismayed at any attempt to denigrate the memory of Michaela”. The trial heard today that there was no significant DNA evidence linking the two accused to the body of Michaela or the crime scene.

2. #RETAIL SALES: The volume and value of retail sales in Ireland have fallen in April, according to new data from the Central Statistics Office. The new figures show a fall in retail sales after two consecutive months which saw numbers rise. A variety of reasons were identified for the drop off including poor weather and the VAT hike.

3. #LEVESON: As former British prime minister Tony Blair gave evidence to the Leveson inquiry into media ethics in the UK today, a protester interrupted proceedings to call Blair a “war criminal”. The man was forcibly removed from the courtroom before being arrested as the current Middle East envoy moved to clarify a number of claims the protester made.

4. #FIANNA FÁIL: New details of calls placed by senior Fianna Fáil figures to President Patrick Hillery on the night of 27 January 1982 show the extent to which Charlie Haughey attempted to form a government before an election could be called with the aide of Brian Lenihan Sr, actions which the future presidential candidate would subsequently deny he ever carried out, famously claiming he had “no hand, act or part” in pressurising President Hillery.

5. #SUNSHINE: Enjoying the sun and the soaring temperatures? Here’s how you enjoyed the weekend in pictures. We do hope you didn’t get sunburnt like the people in these 13 pictures did, and finally we’ve been asking the important question  today: Is it okay for men to take their shirts off in public? The jury’s out.
