The Daily Fix: Thursday

In tonight’s Fix: the latest from the Race for the Áras; meet the new frontman of INXS; the latest from Libya and why it’s been a good day for Angela Merkel.

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of all the day’s main news as well as the bits and pieces you may have missed.

Race for the Áras…

  • It’s the first full day of campaigning in the presidential election and the seven candidates have been out and about. We’ve got a photo gallery of what they’ve been getting up to today.
  • David Norris has said that he would not bring a spouse into Áras an Uachtaráin if he was elected president. He made the comments in a wide-ranging interview on TodayFM this evening.
  • Independent candidate Seán Gallagher has continued his quest to cut campaign costs by urging candidates to  sign up to distributing just one election leaflet which he says will save the taxpayer €10 million. He even made an appeal on Twitter but it appears it may have fallen on deaf ears:

In the day’s other news…

  • The government is proposing changes to public sector pensions that it is estimated will save nearly €2 billion per year but it has met with the ire of one trade union.
  • The German parliament today backed a proposal for the country to participate in an expanded European bailout fund which will mean the country pays €88 billion more into the fund.
  • The government has announced it is to set up a Strategic Investment Fund which will be known as NewERA and which will oversee the management and potential sale of its stake in state assets. The fund will also act as a strategic investment fund.
  • The National Asset Management Agency has completed its biggest sale to date, offloading three luxury London hotels to the group which owns the Telegraph newspaper in a deal worth €800 million.
  • The chief executive of Independent News and Media (INM), Gavin O’Reilly, does not understand digital according to INM’s largest shareholder Denis O’Brien.
  • Two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting at Harold’s Cross in Dublin last week. The man and the woman were arrested in south Dublin earlier today.
  • A pedestrian has died after he was struck by a lorry in Cork today. Gardaí are investigating.
  • You may remember we reported last month that Irish Rail was looking for name suggestions for its station at the Phoenix Park. Did any of you guess that this would be the name they’d go for? (Tip of the hat to Padraic McElroy)

  • Libya’s interim government forces are reported to have captured an airport in the Muammar Gaddafi stronghold of Sirte in what could be a key advancement for the rebels. But where is Gaddafi himself? The search continues.
  • Could this be the man to unseat Barack Obama in the White House? Republicans are clamouring for Chris Christie, governor of New Jersey, to enter the crowded GOP field and he’s reported to be considering it.
  • Joke tweets and a story claiming that US congressmen are holding school children hostage on Capitol Hill by the satirical publication, The Onion, have not gone down well with everyone.
  • If you bought yourself a pair of Reebok’s EasyTone or RunTone trainers then you may not be pleased to hear that the sporting goods company has been forced to pay out $25 million after a consumer agency accused it of making unsupported claims about the benefits of wearing the shoes.
  • Finally, heard about the new frontman of legendary rock band INXS? He’s an Irishman and we’ve asked him nine pressing questions.
