'Together we can make it': UN observer chief appeals for Syrian ceasefire support

Major General Robert Mood says both sides of the Syrian conflict have to work to end violence.

THE HEAD OF THE UN’s monitoring mission in Syria has arrived in the troubled country and called on all sides in the conflict to stop the violence.

Norwegian Major General Robert Mood said that peace would have to be supported by both sides, and that no number of UN monitors could solve all of Syria’s problems.

“To achieve the success of Kofi Annan’s six-point plan, I call on all to stop the violence and to help us on a continued cessation of armed violence in all its forms,” he told reporters at Damascus airport.

“Together we can make it, we have that choice,” he added.

Another 30 UN observers are due in Syria this week, and the UN has approved the deployment of up to 300 in total. But in his appeal for support from both sides of the conflict, Mood warned that this was not enough to stop the violence:

Ten unarmed observers, 30 unarmed observers, 300 unarmed observers, even a thousand unarmed observers cannot solve all the problems.

Meanwhile, Syria’s state news agency reports that the country’s central bank has been targeted in a grande attack. Four policemen were injured and the building suffered slight damage, SANA reports.

SANA also claims that an “armed terrorist group” has been impersonating security officers to rob, murder and abduct citizens.

Activists claim that around 25 people were killed in violence around Syria yesterday.
