FRESH VIOLENCE HAS broken out in parts of London this evening, as police clash with rioters for a third day.

Sky News reports that Lewisham and Peckham have joined Hackney as the hot spots as missiles are thrown and shops are looted.

A bus and a shop have been set alight in Packham, according to the BBC, with London fire brigade sending six fire engines and 30 firefighters to tackle the blaze.

There are also reports of cars being set alight in Lewisham, with many streets blocked off. Sky News reports that the trouble in Hackney broke out earlier when police stopped and searched a person on the street. Three hundred extra police officers have been brought in to strengthen the Metropolitan Police force.

Shop fronts in Hackney have been smashed and objects hurled at police as violence erupted in the Mare Street area earlier this afternoon, according to the BBC. It’s also feared that the trouble is now spreading to the area of Lewisham, with this blog, following tweets about the area, reporting that the Lewisham Town Hall and Market have been closed.

Hackney Central train station is closed, and residents on Twitter are advising that no buses are travelling through the area. This image, tweeted by Billy Kenber shows two police vans on Mare Street, which he describes as being ‘stuck:

The Telegraph reports that London Mayor Boris Johnson has cut is summer holiday short and is returning to the city tomorrow. The Telegraph also reports that there are fears of further intense violence in parts of London tonight, with more police on the streets. Last night there were three times the number of officers on the beat.

The UK’s Home Secretary Theresa May has also returned early from her holiday to meet with police.

Last night violence and looting broke out in Enfield, Walthamstow and Brixton in what police called “copycat criminal activity”. The original violence in Tottenham on Saturday night erupted after a peaceful protest at the shooting dead of Mark Duggan by police.

According to Sky News at least 160 people have now been arrested since Saturday night.

The Daily Mail reports on an alleged looter who posted a picture of himself with items suspected to have been taken from stores which were smashed and raided at the weekend.
