The 9 at 9 Tusla not following up on referrals, Gaza ceasefire hangs by a thread and Jennie’s Law to go to Cabinet.

LAST UPDATE | 20 Oct 2025

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to start the day.

Child and Family Agency

1. In our main story this morning, Stephen McDermott reports that Tusla inquired into less than one-in-five referrals it received about child welfare issues in parts of Dublin earlier this year.

Figures from the agency show that it received 2,168 in the Dublin South Central area during the first three months of the year, but that only 455 of these were the subject of a preliminary inquiry.

Gaza

2. Israel has said it has begun the “renewed enforcement” of the ceasefire with Hamas, after it carried out a wave of strikes on southern Gaza yesterday and accused the militant group of violating the nine-day-old truce.

US President Donald Trump has insisted the ceasefire is still in effect, and also suggested that Hamas leadership was not involved in any alleged breaches, instead blaming “some rebels within”.

Jennie’s Law

3. A new law that will allow those convicted of domestic violence against a current or former partner to be publicly named on a Register of Judgements is being brought forward for approval to Cabinet tomorrow

The law is named in honour of Jennifer Poole. Jennifer was 24 when she was murdered by her ex-partner, 30-year-old Gavin Murphy, in 2021.

Paul Quinn

4. Gardaí are appealing for information on the murder of 21-year-old Paul Quinn on the 18th anniversary of his death.

Race for the Áras

5. Catherine Connolly has described comments made by Fine Gael presidential candidate Heather Humphreys as “a new low” as the election enters its final week.

RIP

6. The funeral details of the Tipperary Senior football manager Philly Ryan have been announced.

Paris

7. French police are on the hunt for a band of thieves who stole eight priceless royal pieces of jewellery from the Louvre Museum in the heart of Paris in broad daylight.

Final approach

8. A deal that is meant to get one of the country’s regional airports up and running for commercial flights for the first time in a decade is set to come before local politicians in Waterford.

Beer wars

9. The annual Galway Christmas Market beer tent is coming back – but it won’t have its classic one litre steins from Monday to Thursday.
