NESTLÉ HAS EXTENDED its recent product recall in Ireland to include an additional batch SMA First Infant Milk.

This recall has been initiated following the European Food Safety Authority’s recommendations on analytical testing, which resulted in Nestlé determining that an additional batch is non-compliant and needs to be recalled. 

Last month, there was a significant widening of the SMA infant formula recall.

The most recent product and batch being recalled is the SMA First Infant Milk, pack size 800g.

It has a Batch Code of 53390346AB and expiry date of December 2027.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is advising parents, guardians and caregivers who may have the recalled products at home not to feed them to their infant or young child. 

However, there is no indication that this incident has resulted in illness in Ireland.

The cereulide toxin, which may be in the products, is caused by the bacterium Bacillus cereus, which can cause food poisoning.

The toxin may be pre-formed in a food and is extremely heat-resistant.

Consumption of foods containing cereulide toxin can lead to nausea and severe vomiting.

Symptoms can appear within five hours and the duration of illness is usually 6 to 24 hours.

If a parent, guardian or caregiver is concerned about the health of their infant or young child, they should contact a healthcare professional.

This recall is associated with a contaminated raw ingredient which was also implicated in the recent recalls of some batches of infant formula and follow-on formula.

An ingredient, ARA oil, which was manufactured in China, was contaminated with cereulide and added as an ingredient in base powder used to make infant formula and follow-on formula.

Nestlé is advising its customers who have purchased any of these batches to make contact via its online form, sharing a photo of the product and the batch code, or by calling its careline on 1800 931 832.
