More batches of Nestlé SMA baby formula recalled over possible toxin

It comes after the food safety regular recalled multiple batches of formula earlier this week.

MORE BATCHES OF SMA baby formula have been recalled by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland over the presence of a toxin that can cause nausea and vomiting.

In an new recall notice, the FSAI said batches of Nestlé’s 400g SMA Alfamino have been recalled along with a number of other types of baby formula that were recalled on Monday

The batch codes on the affected SMA Alfamino are 51210017Y1, with the expiry date May 2027, and 51700017Y1, with the expiry date June 2027.

The recalled batches of formula may contain cereulide, a toxin that is produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. It is extremely heat-resistant, and consuming foods that contain it can lead to nausea and severe vomiting.

Symptoms can appear within five hours, and the illness can last 6-24 hours, the FSAI said. Nestlé has asked customers who purchased any of the batches to contact it.

The regulator said that to date, there have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the products in question.

Parents and guardians have been advised not to feed more of the implicated batches to infants or young children.

In a statement, Nestlé said that no new batches have been added to those recalled.

“We are aware that certain batches supplied to a Northern Ireland customer are available in Ireland. This batch was never supplied directly in Ireland by Nestlé to any Ireland based customers,” a spokesperson said.
