Man arrested over alleged assault on two people canvassing with Mary Lou McDonald yesterday

A man in his 30s is detained at a garda station in the Dublin Metropolitan Region.

A MAN IN his 30s has been arrested in relation to an alleged assault of two people while out on a canvas with Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald yesterday. 

The incident happened on the North Strand Road, Dublin 1 at around 4pm.

A video circulating online shows canvassers standing between McDonald and a man who was verbally abusing her and other members of the group. 

He also threatened to hit McDonald and others.

McDonald has been on a canvas in support of Catherine Connolly’s presidential bid.

A female was subsequently brought to hospital for medical examination.

A garda spokesperson yesterday said that while no medical treatment was required at the scene, An Garda Síochána understood that one of the females attended the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for further assessment.

The man, aged in his 30s, is being detained at a Garda Station in the Dublin Metropolitan Region.
