EACH WEEK, A different Irish parent chats us through a family photo from Instagram and explains what was really going on outside the frame – from tantrums to toilet disasters.

This week, Rosa Parozci (@heyrose.ie) filled us in on what’s happening behind the scenes in a picture of her and her two daughters after the Dublin Pride Parade.

Tell us a bit about this photo. What inspired you to take it?

We had been in town all day for the Dublin Pride Parade. I want our children to grow up believing in the importance of equality. I asked my husband Danny to take this photo of us just outside our home, as a memento of our first family Pride parade or ‘rainbow day’ as Lottie calls it.

What’s one thing that’s going on in this photo that you wouldn’t know from looking at it?

It was a long day in town, we had walked a lot and we were all very hungry and tired. My husband had been working all day. I’d been pushing a pram, holding the baby in the sling, carrying bags and chasing after our three-year-old. I’m so lucky to have a kind and caring mother-in-law who was helping me, otherwise it would have been chaos!

Did it take many attempts to get the right shot?

I don’t mind if they aren’t still or if they’re making faces, as long as it’s a natural photo. That way, instead of a ‘say cheese’ photo with everyone looking at the camera, there’s more of a chance to capture the beauty and spontaneity of those precious family moments, so often lost or forgotten because we’re so busy. I asked my husband to take a lot of photos. That way there would be at least one nice one! 

What do you love about this photo?

This was the first time that Kitty (our 10-month-old) managed to stand up by herself! You can see the delight in my face, and my outstretched arms just having let go of hers. I love it because we were all there to see it and lucky enough to capture it forever. Incredibly, when Lottie walked for the first time, she was also wearing the same rainbow bodysuit.

Was there any editing done to the photo before it was posted?

Nothing is cropped or blurred out, but I did use one my favourite filters when posting it. For this photo the light wasn’t the best and neither was the angle, but it was all about the perfect moment!

How well does this photo reflect your family life in general?

I would like to think it sums us up very well. We are open-minded, supportive of each other, and outspoken about equality in all walks of life.
