Pedestrian and motorcyclist killed in separate road incidents in Cork and Tipperary

There have been two fatal road crashes between last night and this morning.

LAST UPDATE | 21 Sep 2025

A PEDESTRIAN WAS killed in a road traffic collision last night near Mitchelstown, Co Cork.

The collision occurred between junction 11 and junction 12 northbound on the M8 motorway at around 9:15pm and involved a car and the pedestrian, a man in his 40s.

Gardaí said they were investigating the collision, in which the driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was injured.

The pedestrian’s body was taken to the Mortuary in Cork University Hospital, where a post mortem will take place in due course, a Garda spokesperson said.

The M8 Motorway between junction 11 and junction 12 northbound is currently closed pending a technical examination of the scene by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Diversions are in place, the spokesperson said.

Separately, in Tipperary, a motorcyclist in his 70s was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-vehicle road crash in Cahir this morning.

The collision was between the motorcycle and a van. No other injuries were reported and the road remains closed too facilitate a technical examination by gardaí.

The Journal reported yesterday that while road deaths in Ireland are on the decline, more cyclists and pedestrians are being killed.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to either collision to come forward.
