The 9 at 9 Two killed in US mass shooting, multiple deaths on the roads, and weather warnings in place – This morning’s top stories.

GOOD MORNING. HERE is everything you need to know as the day gets underway.

Mass shooting

1. Hundreds of police officers are hunting for a gunman who killed two people and wounded nine others at Brown University, plunging the eastern US campus into lockdown.

The streets around the university in Providence, Rhode Island were filled with emergency vehicles hours after the shooter opened fire yesterday at a building where exams were taking place.

Road crash

2. Two young men died in a road collision in County Tipperary yesterday evening. Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to the four-vehicle crash which happened shortly before 6pm on a local road at Killeen, Ballinunty.

The deceased, a man in his early 20s and a male in his late teens, were occupants of one of the cars. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Weather warning

3. Motorists and road users have been warned to take extra care as wind and rain warnings come into effect this morning for the western and south western parts of the country.

A Status Orange rain warning for Cork and Kerry came into effect at 3am this morning, and is in place until 6pm. Met Éireann said there will be “significant” rainfall accumulations, which may result in hazardous travelling conditions.

Labour leader interview

4. Labour leader Ivana Bacik has said she believes Tánaiste Simon Harris taking on the Finance Ministry will be “destabilising” for this government next year.

Speaking to The Journal in a wide-ranging interview, she said Paschal Donohoe stepping down as the finance minister has created a “destabilising dynamic” that she believes hasn’t been highlighted enough.

Monaghan road incident

5. A man in his 60s has died after he was struck by a lorry in Co Monaghan yesterday.

The collision occurred between the man, who was a pedestrian, and the vehicle on Old Cross Square in Monaghan this morning.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the collision shortly after 10:15am. The male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Search stood down

6. Gardaí stood down the search for missing boy Benjamin Spot after a body was discovered in Co Meath yesterday.

Fourteen-year-old Benjamin was reported missing from Navan on Wednesday, 19 November.

Gardaí said no further action is required at this time.

Hamas

7. Israel said it killed a top Hamas commander in Gaza after an explosive device detonated and wounded two soldiers in the territory’s south.

Hamas in a statement did not confirm the death of Raed Saad in the attack yesterday.

It said a civilian vehicle had been struck outside Gaza City and asserted it was a violation of the ceasefire that took effect on 10 October.

Irish language

8. The Government has been criticised after a new analysis showed that the population of the Gaeltacht is growing but the number of families raising their children through Irish is falling.

Police

9. The London Metropolitan has decided not to launch a criminal investigation into reports that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor asked his taxpayer-funded bodyguard to dig up dirt on Virginia Giuffre.

In October The Mail On Sunday claimed the former duke of York, the King’s brother, passed Giuffre’s date of birth and social security number to his close protection officer in 2011 and asked him to investigate as part of a smear campaign against his accuser.

Now Scotland Yard has said the force will not launch an investigation after assessing the claims.
