Met Éireann issues Status Yellow ice warning for all of Ireland from tomorrow

Sharp frost and icy conditions are expected, and the national forecaster is warning of possible hazardous travel conditions.

A STATUS YELLOW low temperature/ice warning has been issued for all of Ireland from 9pm tomorrow.

Met Éireann has warned that temperatures will fall between -1 and -3 degrees generally.

Sharp frost and icy conditions are expected, and the national forecaster is warning of possible hazardous travel conditions on road and underfoot which may cause travel disruption.

The warning is due to expire at 10am on Saturday.

Meanwhile, wet and windy weather is forecast to return next week, with further flooding expected. Due to a drop in temperature, rain may turn to sleet and snow.

Forecast

There will be lots of cloud and showers today, or longer spells of rain, some heavy, which will bring some spot flooding. The rain will be most persistent across the northern half of the country.

Colder conditions will extend from the north to most places through the day, with early afternoon temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees over the northern half of the country and 6 to 9 or 10 degrees further south.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, wet and breezy with further outbreaks of rain or showers, some of that heavy, with a continued chance of spot flooding. It’ll be cold with frost and some icy conditions, particularly in the north and west, with lowest temperatures of -1 to +4 degrees.

Tomorrow will be cold with some frost and ice in places, especially in the west and north.  

Cloud and rain in parts of Munster and south Leinster will clear through the morning with mostly dry and sunny conditions following. Highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees are expected.

Friday will be mainly dry, very cold, frosty with some icy patches. Lowest temperatures of -4 to +1 degrees in mostly light variable breezes.

Saturday, Valentine’s Day, will start off frosty with some icy patches. Overall it will be a cold day with highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees generally.

It will be dry with some spells of sunshine but become cloudy throughout the day, with rain spreading northeastwards through the afternoon and evening, turning heavy in parts, with the chance of some sleet.

Saturday night will be wet and windy, with spells of heavy rain and with some sleet and possibly a little snow over higher ground in the north and east. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees are expected.

Sunday will be a bright day with sunshine and scattered showers, some heavy and with a chance of hail and maybe the odd isolated thunderstorm in coastal parts. Highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees are expected, and it will be a breezy day.

Sunday night will be breezy or windy and there’ll be a mix of clear spells and scattered showers, some heavy and of hail. There’s a chance of sleet over higher ground. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees are expected.

Monday will be breezy or windy with sunshine and showers. The showers will be most widespread in the west and north, some heavy, with the chance of hail and isolated thunderstorms.

The best of the drier weather with sunny spells will be in the east and south and it’ll gradually become a little drier later. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees are expected with fresh to strong and gusty west to northwest winds.

Monday night will be mainly dry with clear spells, but it’ll be cold with frost and some icy patches. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +3 degrees are expected.

Tuesday will start off cold and frosty for many, with some sunshine. Cloud and rain will gradually increase, some of that heavy. There’s a chance of a little sleet and snow too, especially over higher ground. Highest temperatures of 3 to 8 degrees are expected.

There’ll likely be further outbreaks of rain on Wednesday, but it’s expected to clear throughout the day. Highest temperatures of 3 to 8 degrees are expected.

The rest of next week is expected to be cold with some frosty nights, there will be some drier brighter weather but with showers or longer spells of rain at times too.
