Making pancakes tomorrow? They're getting more flipping expensive

The cost of making pancakes has increased by 35% over the past five years.

IT’S PANCAKE TUESDAY tomorrow, but if you’re planning on marking the occasion, you may notice that the cost of doing so has risen in the last few years.

The Central Statistics Office has calculated the rise in price for the key ingredients of pancakes – eggs, milk, and flour – and found that it has increased by 35% over the past five years.

Analysing price increases from December 2020 to December 2025, the CSO said the cost of two litres of full fat milk increased by 72c (42.6%), 2kg of flour by 62c (31.6%), and a carton of six large eggs by 57c (32%).

If you like your pancakes with a sprinkle of sugar, then you’re in worse luck: the price of a 1kg bag has risen by 69c (60.5%) over the past five years.

The CSO does not track the price of lemons or lemon juice in the average basket of goods and services. It also did not include the cost increase of pre-prepared pancake mix.

From December 2024 to December 2025, overall consumer prices rose by 2.8%. Food and non-alcoholic beverages prices rose by 4.1% in that same time period.
