OVER 4,000 DRIVERS were caught speeding while 175 were found to be under the influence over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Easter road safety campaign saw Gardaí conducting a major road policing operation from 7am last Thursday, 2 April until 7am this morning.

Also during this time more than 290 drivers were stopped for being on their mobile phones while over 95 were found to not be wearing seatbelts.

During the operation one driver was stopped for travelling at 138 km/h in a 50km/hr zone in Tipperary and another was found to be travelling at 102 km/h in a 60km/h zone in Dublin.

Gardaí are appealing to all road users continues to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to slow down and to always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, to wear your seatbelt and keep your eyes always on the road.

Over the bank holiday weekend there were three fatalities on the roads and five serious injury crashes.

Yesterday a man in his 50s was killed in a single vehicle crash in Co. Cork. Separately, a female pedestrian in her 40s was seriously injured in a bus crash in Dublin. 

Fatalities over the weekend brought the total number of road deaths this year to 44.
