O'Shea was speaking on the Grey Matters podcast

Should there be a full cabinet minister for older people?

Dr Diarmuid O’Shea said that a dedicated minister would help push for policy changes for older people.

HAVING A DEDICATED government minister for older people would help drive policy changes for the age group, Dr Diarmuid O’Shea has said.

O’Shea, president of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, made the suggestion on the Grey Matters podcast.

Speaking to hosts Terry Prone and Fergus Finlay, O’Shea said issues such as medical card access, free travel and additional social supports need stronger advocacy from the government.

He added that “the idea of having a dedicated minister for older people would be a very important part of that”.

While Minister of State Kieran O’Donnell has a responsibility for older people, O’Shea said he would like to see the role extended to cabinet level.

So, we’re asking: should there be a full cabinet minister for older people?
