A major step toward a more reliable and future‑proof bus and cycle system

Long term travel improvements coming as construction works get underway in the coming months on the Ballymun / Finglas to City Centre Core Bus Corridor Scheme.

CONSTRUCTION IS SET to begin this summer on one of Dublin’s biggest transport upgrades in decades, as the transformative BusConnects programme is set to enter its construction phase. The National Transport Authority’s (NTA’s) BusConnects programme is an ongoing public transport infrastructure initiative focused on improving bus networks in several cities across Ireland. In Dublin, BusConnects is delivering a more reliable, efficient, and future-proofed bus network designed to meet the needs of a growing population and a changing city.

What is BusConnects

BusConnects is designed to connect more people to more places through an enhanced bus system, via integration with other public transport initiatives that links communities to the city centre. Alongside improved cycling and pedestrian facilities across Dublin, BusConnects aims to enhance pedestrians’ quality of life by delivering a safer and more sustainable transport system. These improvements support the Government’s Climate Action Plan and will contribute to a healthier and greener urban environment across the Greater Dublin Area (GDA).

By prioritising dedicated bus lanes and improving overall reliability, BusConnects aims to make public transport a more attractive choice for daily travel. These improvements are designed to provide a smoother experience for commuters, supporting the transition towards a more connected and sustainable city.

The infrastructure phase of the BusConnects Dublin Programme is progressing as construction soon gets underway on the Ballymun/ Finglas to City Centre Scheme. As the second Scheme within the wider BusConnects Dublin programme, this development builds further momentum behind the delivery of long-term transport improvements.

What it means for the area

The Scheme will deliver significant long-term benefits once completed by providing more frequent and consistent bus journey times. This will create a faster, more reliable transport system and better connect bus journeys. communities along the route and beyond.

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption wherever possible throughout the construction phase. The temporary impacts associated with construction works will lead to significant long-term improvements in how people move around the city, supporting a more reliable and efficient public transport system for Dublin.
