WITH A SQUARE, almost flat roof and stark brick walls, Bauhaus in Rathfarnham, Dublin 16 is no ordinary property.

Designed in 1964 by German architects Joachim and Margot Shermann, it makes sense that the unusual property was named after the influential art and design school of the same moniker that was in operation from 1919 to 1931.

Despite its industrial-looking appearance, the five-bedroom property was built by hand and without machinery with materials including salvaged brick and old lamp posts. It also sits on a lush green site of 3.5 acres.

The property was designed to focus inwards, with few external windows and everything pointing towards the atrium at the centre. There are no gutters: instead the slanted roof, which slopes inwards, allows rainwater to drain into the middle of the atrium.

Inside, the property is entirely open plan and features no corridors, except for one section which features a study and the master bedroom. Sitting on 3.5 acres of mature grounds, many of the rooms enjoy beautiful views.

The hall leads straight into the spacious kitchen, where floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with light. The sleek kitchen is fitted with top-of-the-range units, aged fossil limestone flooring and a dining area, while there’s also a second fully equipped kitchen just a few steps away.

Also accessed from the hall is the large living area, with wooden floors and an open fireplace adding a cosy feel. Sliding doors lead to the atrium. Off the living room is access to the master bedroom, with a walk-in wardrobe and large bathroom.

Each of the bedrooms feature wooden flooring, while the main bathroom boasts a marble walk-in shower and bath surround. From the atrium, a door leads to a studio which enjoys spectacular views of the garden.

Separate to the house is a self-contained one-bedroom apartment comprising a living room, fully fitted kitchen, utility room, bathroom and bedroom.

Multiple golf clubs are within close proximity to the property, including Rathfarnham Golf Club and Edmondstown Golf Club. Rathfarnham village is just a 10-minute drive away, while the drive to the city centre will take about 40 minutes.
