DURING THE FIRST three months of 2017 there were over 200,000 car adverts placed on DoneDeal with a total of 84 million views. There was an average €21 million worth of motor ads published each day.
The Volkswagen Golf was the top selling car model, representing a massive 5.9 per cent of the total number of cars sold on DoneDeal during Q1.
The second most popular model was the Ford Focus representing 5.8 per cent of cars sold, followed by the Volkswagen Passat which represented 4.8 per cent of cars sold. The Audi A4 was in fourth position and the BMW 3 Series was in fifth.
The Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus are popular choices with new car buyers too and as there are plenty of them about, used buyers have a great deal of choice. When it comes to the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, these cost a lot less second-hand than they do new, so it looks like there are some savvy shoppers waiting to buy premium brands at discount prices.
The most popular age of car advertised among private sellers was 2006. For cars advertised by dealers, the most popular year was 2011.
In terms of colour, we are sticking to old faithfuls. The biggest selling car colour on DoneDeal in Q1 was silver, followed by black, blue, grey and red. Traditionally, the value retention of silver cars is stronger than other colours and it is very popular with secondhand buyers.
Commenting on the data, Cathal Cremen from DoneDeal said: “With an average of 1 car ad placed per minute, DoneDeal provides a strong indicator towards used car sales trends.”
