WATERWAYS IRELAND HAS confirmed it is investigating the circumstances surrounding a boat on the Grand Canal in Dublin that has partially sunk.
The barge, which is moored on the south side of the Grand Canal near the Charlemont Luas stop, has partially sunk. It remains above the water.
Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed it has responded to a call over the barge, which was at risk of sinking or rolling over, on the evening of Sunday 28 June.
Paramedics and firefighters attended the scene.
“It was reported someone was on the barge and shouts for help could be heard,” a spokesperson said.
The windows of the barge were broken in an effort to ensure the safety of anyone who may have been on board.
“On arrival, Swiftwater Rescue Technicians carried out a search and the barge was declared empty.”
The scene was then handed over to gardaí and Waterways Ireland, the body responsible for the management of inland waterways.
The state body said it is working with the boat’s owner to recover the vessel.
