Justice Minister shocked by 'horrific attack' on woman set on fire in Clondalkin

It’s understood the assailant called to the door of the residence and sprayed the woman with an accelerant before lighting her on fire.

THE MINISTER FOR Justice has said he is shocked by an attack on a woman, where she was set on fire at a house in Clondalkin.

Jim O’Callaghan is appealing to anyone with information to contact gardaí. No arrests have been made yet.

The woman was hospitalised with serious burn injuries following the incident in Oak Downs yesterday morning.

It’s understood the assailant called to the door of the residence not long after 10am and sprayed the woman with an accelerant before lighting her on fire.

Minister O’Callaghan said in a post to X: “I am shocked by this morning’s horrific attack on a woman in Clondalkin.

“I have been briefed on the attack by the Gardaí, and I join with them in appealing to anyone with information to come forward so that the perpetrator of this vicious attack can be brought to justice.”

Social Democrats councillor Eoin Ó Broin spoke to The Journal yesterday and described the reports of the attack as “shocking” and said “that shouldn’t happen to anybody”.

Independent councillor Francis Timmons also expressed his shock at “such a horrific incident”.

“The quiet local community is in shock,” he told The Journal

“My thoughts are with this lady who has suffered horrendous burns after opening her front door!”

Sinn Féin Councillor William Carey is the chairperson of the local residents group and lives less than 150 metres from the hosue where the incident occurred.

He told RTÉ Radio One’s Morning Ireland today that the estate is usually quiet and “idyllic”.

“To set a person alight, there’s a lot of planning, a lot of thought that went into what they were doing,” he said.

“[Locals] are asking themselves: If an incident like this can happen to one individual, what does that say for the rest of us living close by?”

He added that during the time frame of the attack, teachers at the local creche were bringing children to the park. “This is what they almost passed by.”

A man who was also in the home at the time suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

He was also taken to hospital.

An incident room has been established in Clondalkin Garda Station and gardaí are appealing to any witnesses to contact them.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station on (01) 666 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
