Sleep Here: A unique hexagonal wooden lodge, hidden in an orchard in Co Mayo

The Cuckoo Wood Hexagon is a treehouse on the ground – a tranquil getaway from everyday life.

YOU MAY HAVE visited Westport before, but chances are you haven’t had experienced it in as dreamy a place as the Cuckoo Wood Hexagon.

Owner Irma van Baalen let us in on the history of the special property, which has grown and evolved over the last twenty years.

“The Hexagon was built in the early nineties and served as a home for somebody who helped me setting up a garden and orchard. When he left, it served as a guest room for friends and family.

“Five years ago I managed to renovate it and to build a bathroom next to it. I officially started to rent it out April 2015 and t has proved to be very popular!”

One click through the photos and you can instantly understand why. Nestled into a property that is half orchard, half woodland, the Cuckoo Wood Hexagon is just a few miles away from Westport. It sleeps two and has a sweet deck for reading and relaxing during the warm months.

Inside, you’ll feel you’re in a treehouse; each window gives a view of lush, green foliage that provides a buffer to the outside world. It’s a simple retreat, with a wood burning stove and a sitting area against large windows.

But if you choose to explore, you’ll have a range of options, both tranquil and festive. From the hexagon, there is an hour walking loop around the hill at the edge of the property. Croagh Patrick is seven kilometres away, as are beautiful beaches. You could visit Westport House, a big country house with a museum and manicured grounds.

If you’re looking for musical entertainment, many pubs in Westport have traditional music sessions nightly. And of course, you’re just a few miles from the Wild Atlantic Way and its stunning cycling path to Achill Island.

For a restorative and restful break away from the hubbub of daily life, you couldn’t find a more perfect spot than Cuckoo Wood Hexagon.
