The victim, who was in his late teens, received a stab wound to the chest, Gardaí have said.
He was taken to Beaumont Hospital following the incident. His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
Gardaí and members of Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene and a man in his late teens was arrested at the scene and taken to Raheny Garda station where he is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
Gardaí have said that it appears that the victim and the attacker knew each other.

@Pat Lonergan: … Fact check. The definition of an animal is a member of the kingdom Animalia, and is typically characterized by a multicellular body, specialized sense organs, voluntary movement, responses to factors in the environment and the ability to acquire and digest food. A horse, lion and human are each an example of an animal. Scientists have searched in vain for a distinguishing characteristic that might separate humans from animals. It turns out there isn’t one!
Hope victim makes a speedy physical recovery … emotional recovery is a different matter ….glad someone was arrested ( well done to anyone who helped out … and to Gardai … if that person guilty hope judge sets a severe example …. anyone reading this … could be your child in hospital now
I know it is a bit of stretch but when you see Leo over in New York, asking for Ireland to be on the security council and mean while at home, he can’t even keep his citizens safe going to and from work, there should be a public transport police.
currently on the replacement train, we were transferred after it happened. people were running down into our carriage, there was so much confusion. people said two were dead but I saw the victim on the stretcher after and he was talking. the attacker looks worse, about 15 of the victims friends beat him up and got the knife. I hope the victim will be okay, he was a young black lad.
@Sara Dowdall: Poor lad. Lucky he was with several friends and rushed to hospital. Let’s hope he gets better soon, and no one else was cut. Horrible thing to happen.
@Sara Dowdall: Yep I saw the fella go right past me too, followed by the fairly incoherent assailant. Mixed reports that it was more serious and involving others was genuinely spooky to overhear.
@Drahcir Neirbo: not really a deterrent with a revolving door policy in place for potential jail time . Judges are extremely reluctant to sentence and there is always a sob story.
@Yzo Sirrius: The Dart has been running since the mid 80s. This non-fatal stabbing truly has been a looming spectre alright. Not to downplay the seriousness of this situation but…come on.
@Yzo Sirrius: not just in Dublin. There are anti social behavior problems on certain intercity lines. So much so they have put an alcohol ban on some trains and the Lucas red line isn’t called the hospital line for no reason
@Yzo Sirrius: As far as I’m aware this has never before happened on the Dart. A recent article also describes it as ‘unprecedented’. This is a service that’s been running since the mid 80s. So to say it was inevitable is hyperbolic in the extreme!
Whether or not we need rail police shouldn’t be decided based on this complete aberration of an incident. I’m not criticizing you, I’m simply saying….come on.
@I’m not wavy gravy: that’s fair enough, I take your point and thanks for clarifying.
I disagree that it’s hyperbole to say this was inevitable. If my statement about instating some form of transit police was based on this incident alone, then yes, that’s hyperbole, but it was based on the increase in anti-social behaviour on public transport in general.
To say that there is no need for change because the service has been running since the 80′s is myopic, at best. Look at the changes that have had to be made on buses with the protective shells for drivers, the windows in the trains had to be changed because of bricks being thrown at them and the Luas had to install fixtures to prevent people from surfing.
exactly, I really hope everyone involved will be okay. pretty proud of everyone coming together on the train though, I’ve made some good friends tonight.
Need rail police/ need transport police/ need more security to go about our everyday lives. But i thought this multikultural society was making us stronger? seems to be making us less safe. Need deportations and a block placed on entry into the country in the first place/
@PaddyKajinski: And suddenly it’s the fault of multiculturalism, anecdotally we can assume the victim is black from an above comment but we don’t know the race of the assailant but let’s blame it on immigrants anyway…
@PaddyKajinski: what are you on about? Please explain, in detail, based on the facts you know about what happened in this particular situation, how this is related to the dreaded “multiculturalism”?
And I mean specifics, not anecdotes or hearsay and conjecture…answers on postcard, please!
No of course we don’t. The authorities are not going to release such information.. but it will come out many months from now when the court case is reported at the bottom of a page in a paper, when everyone has forgotten all about it. We see exactly how authorities handle multikult situations like this. Meanwhile lets continue to militarise our society
