Emergency services attend seven-vehicle collision on M50

Gardaí said they have not received reports of any injuries.

MOTORISTS IN DUBLIN have been told to expect delays on the M50 this morning following a seven-vehicle collision on the motorway.

The collision happened at Junction 9 Red Cow in the southbound direction at around 7am.

Dublin Fire Brigade and emergency services are at the scene of the collision.

In a post on social media, Dublin Fire Brigade said the recovery “is well underway”, adding: “we hope to be clear soon”.

The collision led to the closure of lanes two and three.

The vehicles have been moved to the hard shoulder and the previously closed lanes have since reopened.

In a statement to The Journal, a garda spokesperson said: “We have been advised that while the area remains busy, all lanes have reopened and we have not received any reports of injuries at this time.”

To drive a safe distance from other cars especially on wet days results in people constantly cutting in front of you.

@thomas molloy: that’s correct, by driving at the appropriate speed and distance that the weather traffic and road conditions dictate , is not me giving another driver the right to pull in immediately in front of me , it’s a safety barrier in the event of a collision or unexpected slow down or stop , that safety barrier is now gone because some Gob….. doesn’t understand the need for safe distance , I’m not leaving that safe distance for you to pull into, I’m leaving it for me ! It would appear that a lot of road users don’t understand the seriousness of their actions on the roads and they get by on a daily basis on chance and good luck, and not by safe and good driving skills.

Great point. One thing that always amazes me is the amount of drivers that don’t adjust their speed or braking distance to suit road conditions.

@thomas molloy: Correct. It crtainly seems that the majority of drivers on Irish Motorways have little or no idea of how to use them safely. The M50 is a great example.

Another great example is the three lane section of the M7, from observation alone it seems the majority of drivers regard the leftmost lane as almost a second hard shoulder and think that they need to be in the middle lane even though the left lane is empty!

There is a serious need for a driver education campaign about motorway driving.

I most other countries if you drive like the middle lane hoggers on the M7 you will be pulled over and fined.

@Shelldrake.: you’re 100% right, I just hope that you’re not the type of driver that keeps driving on the overtaking lane when there are no cars in front of you or very far away from you, regardless of the conditions, there are drivers constantly driving in the overtaking lane for whatever reason when there is no immediate traffic in front of them. The law says it clearly whether people like it or not, even if you’re driving at the speed limit, drivers must overtake and immediately bank back to the left, even if you’re driving at or above the speed limit, let the Gards be the ones to catch them.

@TheGood Feign: Perhaps you are travelling too slow in middle lane and should actually move over to the left lane to allow faster traffic to progress?

I travel the M3 to work every day and the behaviors of some drivers is appalling to say the least. There seems to be no such thing anymore of leaving safe space with the vehicle in front of you. Cars and in particular VAN’s weaving in and out of lanes to just get ahead of you often forcing you to slam on the breaks. Our motorways seem to be a free for all. No one obeying the speed limit and drivers intimidating people to move out of their way by flashing lights and driving up your rear.
People in a mad hurry just to get to a point of gridlock further down the road.

@James Carolan: if it’s getting to the point where you’re getting consistently flashed by other drivers for being in their way then you have to ask yourself why you’re constantly in their way – driving in one of the overtaking lanes perhaps? I stick to 60 MP/h the inside lane of the M50 every morning and drive past tens of drivers just taking their time in the overtaking lanes, which means that those looking to make additional progress (whether legal or not) swerve between lanes to avoid the deadwood. The all-around standard of driving in this country is awful, especially on motorways.

No surprise to see vans involved. All up each other’s a*ses no doubt. Some people need to learn the hard way. Maybe next time they’ll slow down and leave enough distance between vehicles.
