A Life’s Worth

This miniseries from Sweden is inspired by the story of the first Swedish UN battalion in Bosnia in 1993. It centres on four young soldiers – Forss, Babic, Strand and Kilpinen – who are on their first overseas service in the country.

The mission proves hugely difficult, and their battalion commander Andreasson is torn between the desire to intervene and his duty to follow orders. Expect stories of human brutality but also of the power of friendship and trust in intense situations.

Deep Fake

  • For fans of: Black Mirror, Years and Years

We live in an era where the growth of AI means that it can be difficult to tell what is true from false online. Canadian series Deep Fake looks into the new phenomenon of ‘undetectable’ deepfakes, and asks – when you can’t believe your eyes and ears, who can you actually trust?

It centres on Stéphanie (played by Sophie Nélisse, of Yellowjackets), a 25-year-old whose life is overturned when a video of her mother goes viral and ruins her political career. Stéphanie believes the video is a fake, even though everyone else thinks it’s real. But who created it? Stéphanie goes undercover to work at a start-up that she suspects could be behind undetectable deepfakes. But will she get discovered before she finds out more?

The Hunt

  • For fans of: The Twelve, Lady in the Lake

Viaplay International / YouTube

This Dutch series is inspired by a true crime that took place in 1999, when teenager Marianne Vaatstra was found murdered on the outskirts of a small village in the Netherlands, not far from an asylum seekers’ centre.

The Hunt reconstructs the case, telling the story from a different character’s perspective in each episode. It looks at how xenophobia, racism, and fake news reared their heads during the hunt for Marianne’s killer, with much of the speculation fueled by social media. The crime remained unsolved for more than 12 years, and the series shows how the case was finally cracked.

Vanguard

  • For fans of: Industry, Succession

By the age of 35, Jan Stenbeck (played by Jakob Oftebro in this series) appeared to be living the perfect life – working for Morgan Stanley in New York and dating the woman of his dreams, the American socialite Merrill McLeod.

But after tragedy strikes, he must return to Sweden and take over the family business. He brings with him fresh ideas that he picked up in the US, and starts to transform the family business into a telecom and media company. But this brings him into conflict with his siblings, and the more Jan pursues his business interests, the higher the chance rises of everything around him collapsing. This true story is for those who like dramas about complicated families, and high-stakes entrepreneurs.

You can watch all of these series on the Seinnteoir TG4 (Player).
