Drug found in 'E' tablets could fight blood cancers
Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma cancers could be attacked using MDMA – but the drug may not be ready for use for ten years.
ECSTASY IS BETTER known as an illegal clubbers’ drug but scientists have found that it may be modified to help kill cancer cells.
The medical researchers at Birmingham University who have uncovered the new use for the ingredient MDMA say, however, that the drug would not be ready for use for at least a decade, said Medical News Today.
Their study was published in the journal Investigational New Drugs, where research found that modified MDMA (known as ecstasy) could kill leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma cells 100 times more effectively than the body trying to fight the cancer cells on its own.
Professor John Gordon, who led the study, told the BBC that while the development of the drug was only in its infancy, it could ultimately be a lifesaver for patients.
